Yes, non verbal people can learn to read. I teach disabled adults. (all

sorts of disabilities) I have 2 clients that are totally deaf and they both

read. I don't know what teaching approach was used but I am sure it was some

sort of sight reading. My daughter can read a little but not much. Last

year her teacher used a program called Edmark. (they have a web site...just

do a search) She was doing great with that program and was learning how to

read by sight. Mollie is not able to sound out words but she has an amazing

memory. She tends to learn most things by sight so I am not surprised that

she would learn to read by sight. This year she had a teacher who used a

program called Project Read. The teacher had more experience with project

read and told me that Project Read was sight based as well so I let her give

it a try. Mollie's IEP is next week and I will be insisting that they use

Edmark again. Even Mollie thinks that Edmark is better. She seemed to learn

much faster and her comprehension was better with the Edmark lessons. I

don't know anything about Project Read but I would defiantly recommend

Edmark.
