Sad to say it sounds like another MD who slept through basic physiology,

and whose favorite word (and mindset) is NO. Any (lowly) massage

therapist can tell you that steroids over time lead to dowager's hump,

adrenal burnout, osteoporosis, blood sugar instability and a few more

" inconveniences " . The fastest way to eliminate headaches is with a black

coffee enema -- a procedure that used to be in the Merck manual until

1977. Headache is a classic indicator of metabolic wastes and toxins

building up faster than the body can eliminate them. Vitamin C complex,

esp quercetin is very useful for reducing inflammation and pain --

essentially give the body what it needs to address the irritation and

resolve it, don't push the body (via steroids) into running faster and in

effect pretending there's no problem. Good old GAPS bone broth can help

too. Surely there's a naturopath ND, or CCN in your area who can provide

more informed, valid and useful support for your daughter. If you don't

get a recommendation from the local folks shortly, try a web search. I

doubt you'll do worse than what your MD is telling you now. Trust your

instincts, starting with your gut feel that there's more to the issue than

what this guy is able or willing to tell you. KL

The doctor is wrong. The drops do not just absorb into the eye bulb it

also goes into the tear ducts.

2 major possible complications come to mind.

1. Steroid eye drops can increase blood pressure - which could lead to the

headaches. When I was on them in the past my BP went up and the pressure

in my eyes got into glaucoma range. So don't let this guy try to convince

you there are no side effects.

2. The drops enter the sinuses through the tear ducts. Steroids in the

sinus cavities can result in some sinus issues - as the steroids open the

door for opportunistic bad guys.

I am sure there are others but those are the two that come to mind with

headaches as a side effect. Not sure about the numbness - could be part of

the headache/pressure?

Alternatives get tricky. Steroids are very effective at

reducing inflammation, I know of some different things people have done to

treat cataracts and things like that but unsure of how helpful they would

be with the inflammation/irritation. There is something called something

like Dr 's Eye Bright ... I would need to search around but that

is what comes to mind. I know some people use that straight, some do a

homemade mix of EIS/MSM and the eye bright. Again not sure how helpful it

would be for your daughter though.

Is the eye lid feeling better? 2 weeks of steroids and no improvement and

the side effects you listed would make me very unhappy.

As a mom, my first instinct would be to reduce the dose. I would just try

cutting it in half on my own (no matter what the doctor claimed) -- my

thinking would be that perhaps it would be just enough to give her some

relief but reduce the level of the side effects -- at least as a way to get

by until a better alternative can be found. My 2 cents!

,

I was just reading about castor oil recently and how it is great for lubricating

dry/inflamed eyes. You can use it like eye drops. I talked to my husband about

this as well - he's a holistic doctor - and he suggested that your first line of

action be to try either castor oil or magnesium oil as a replacement for the

steroid because it would be a more natural form of a local anti-inflammatory

than the steroid (hopefully without any of those nasty side effects). He said

that if this didn't seem to work very well for your daughter that she is welcome

to come in and see him. There are some things that he could do to help lessen

the side effects of the steroids until she is able to get the replacement in

August. You can find his contact into on his website at

www.warreninternalhealth.com if you end up needing to do that.

Accupressure/massage could definately help the headaches.

Consider wearing an eye patch for part of the day to reduce eye movement?
