Unprotected exposure should be avoided, the groups says, to help reduce ultraviolet-related cancers. The academy also advises physicians to actively discuss with patients how to get adequate vitamin D. The paper includes a table listing the Institute of Medicine's minimum intake levels according to age, sex, and pregnancy and lactation status.
