Guest guest
My son Josh who is 11 yrs. old. Also has verbal & oral dyspraxia. He also turns his head to one side when he is looking at things. Including reading a book. The eye doctor's said he has a 4th nerve palsy in that eye. They did surgery to correct it. Now he has a head tilt to the other side. They are saying that they might want to do surgery again. I don't think I will let them until I learn more about all this. If you learn anything please let me know. I would really be interested in seeing if any of this is related to each other. Sandi Mother of Josh who has Verbal & Oral Dyspraxia. Guest guest
Hi Leigh!! I don't a lot about this subject, but wanted to mention Ocular Apraxia. I know of some people whose children had verbal/oral/limb apraxia who also ended up having ocular apraxia. It follows the same principal.....The brain is fine, the eye is fine, but a road block is stopping the information from the brain to the eye - therefore movement isn't always as the child intends. I wish I knew more, but something to definetly bring up at his assessment!! Guest guest
My daughter (4) also has a tilt and squint sometimes when she is looking at something, usually the tv. But her eye dr. said that she has seen alot of kids like this and it is behavorial. She also said they all outgrow it. So, I am not sure. However, I do know a boy who had developmental delays and issues and he ended up having surgery on his eyes twice, but I didn't see a difference until he made developmental progress. However, I am not an expert. I know there is eye therapy with flashlights, but I am sorry to say, I haven't looked into enough to comment. I'm glad you posted this question. Guest guest
Here is the ocular motor group list for more information. oma/ I also found a bunch of links when I searched on the internet for " ocular apraxia " . I would certainly bring it to the evaluators attention as well as see a pediatric eye doctor. Good luck! denise > Hi, > > I am a new list member. Guest guest
Leigh: My son, ph, is also 2.10 and is now wearing therapeutic prism glasses. Joe exhibited the same symptoms as your son, he would turn his head sideways when watching tv or sometimes when looking at people. He also squinted and rubbed his eyes frequently. He used to also feel his way around a room, like a blind person, to figure out where he was in relation to objects, etc. He also was probably memorizing where things were rather than seeing where they were. Another parent told us about a behavioral optometrist who examined Joe and diagnosed him with visual tracking issues, among other things. As you have already read in other posts, this means that Joe's eyes are not working together. As a result, his eyes " fight " each other for dominance (as to whose signals are correct). The head turning is Joe's attempt to resolve the conflict presented by the lack of coordination of his eyes. Behavioral optometrists belive other issues like SID, motor planing or even apraxic speech are related to visual problems. The glasses bring focus to ph's eyes; since wearing them, he no longer tilts his head and there has been notable improvement in his attention and focus in other therapy sessions. The doctors also do visual training sessions; we have not kept up with these as it costs $125 per half hour. Plus, Joe is already near overwhelmed with all the other therapies he receives. You can do vision training at home. Basically, all it consists of is rolling a ball or balloon towards your son. Or you can attach a ball to a string and hang it so it swings back and forth. We also have a balance board that Joe uses when he watches TV. The purpose is for Joe to feel and balance his body as he's using his eyes to focus; it's supposed to help with body awareness. Sorry this is so long but we've just gone through what you're going through now. If you want to know more, you can e-mail me directly at jacenterprise@.... Good luck!!
