Guest guest
I was wondering if anyone has had to have an otoplasty (ear pinning) surgery done on their child. My daughter has to have one and I want to know what to expect. How bad does it hurt? Is it hard to get them to leave it alone? What is the typical age to have this procedure done? I am an extremely emotional mother and I don't know if I can get through just having the IV's put in, so I am trying to prepare myself, so that I can try to keep my composure until she has gone into the OR. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you,

Guest guest
My daughter needs this surgery to correct the formation of her ears. They stick straight out instead of laying back. She already wears glasses and we figured that as cruel as kids can be, they will probably pick on her for her wearing glasses, we wanted to correct her ears so that she wouldn't get picked on for that. It's the self esteem issue and I want to save her from as much as I can. I have heard that it is a minor surgery, but I want to know what to expect. Guest guest
Hi! I don't have any answers, but we are considering the same thing for our daughter for the exact reasons you discribed. Her ears are protruding and cupped, one ear is larger due to hemifacialmicrosomia, and she wears glasses, too. We decided that this is one of the things we can " fix " and other children can be so cruel, not to mention the adults who have already pointed her ears out to us. The only info I have is that it is best to do after 2 years of age and since she turns 2 tomorrow, the search will soon begin. I am amazed that the couple of times that I have brought this up to other parents I have gotten somewhat negative responses, but I have an uncle who had his ears pinned as an adult and he wishes that he could have had it done as a child. He said that his self esteem was so low just because the teasing was relintless. Let me know how things work out! Gloria
Guest guest
Thank you for your encouragement. My daughter will be 5 in 3 weeks. The doctors that i called said that they won't even look at kids until they are at least 4. The reason is because their ears will still grow until around this age. If they do the surgery too soon they will end up having to do it again because of the ears still growing. The doctor is with our states birth to 3 program, so he is supposed to be good with kids. I will let you know how it goes. She has her first appt. tomorrow with the plastic surgeon. The thing that bothers me is that this is not covered by insurance and we will have to pay it out of pocket up front before it is done. Do you mind if I e-mail you privately? Thank you, Sheila > >Hi! >I don't have any answers, but we are considering the same thing for >our daughter for the exact reasons you discribed.
