Guest guest
Hi... I can completely empathize. PDD/ Autism is often confused with Apraxia of Speech... and SOME kids do have both diagnoses, legitimately. Special Ed. folks often incorrectly assume that Apraxia is on the PDD/ Autism spectrum. Many kids with Apraxia have some sensory issues. Some are shy and have trouble with eye contact when they are unable to speak easily......( Show Grandma how well you can say this limerick!.....I'm speaking of an older child, now>) Many kids do repetitive motor movements, like lining up cars, because motor planning is so tough. Kids with Apraxia are usually not bothered- in fact, are delighted! to have an adult or older child intervene in their play. Remember, having little speech is a serious barrier to socialization... Hang in there. Your gut is almost always the best indicator. God Bless. Jenn Moir
Guest guest
Hi everyone! Have I mentioned lately how MUCH I appreciate this list and all of you that take the time to listen and respond and share their stories?! I had to say that because I find this list is INVALUABLE. Thank you thank you.... =) Hunter had an IEP yesterday. He turns 3 next month so I suppose he'll start preschool of some sort. He still has no diagnosis. He's confused everyone. They want to put him in a preschool that is very speech-intensive but there probably will be no openings until September so until then they think maybe a special-ed preschool would be a good idea. I have my reservations... mostly because I don't know how a special ed class would really help him except to get him used to a preschool environment. He's not mentally delayed. At the same time.. well maybe playing with different kids would be good anyway... Hunter has a woman that comes to the house twice a week to do this play therapy with him. This has nothing to do with his speech but is more of a social thing. She says she doesn't know WHY she's there because Hunter is very social and plays well with others. Today he had his first speech appointment with a woman 15 minutes from us. He only can see her few more times before his 3rd birthday which I am really sad about because she was lovely! I'm hoping I can get insurance to pay for her fter he turns three... anyone know anything about this? After her first half hour with him she said she has only seen one child like him and it was 17 years ago with a little boy that turned out to have childhood apraxia. She said he makes great eye contact and understands everything she says and is very social.... SO WHY in these reports I was handed it says HUnter doesn't make eyecontact and doesn't respond socially the way he should?? It seems to me they are looking for what they want to see GRR GRR GRR! See my half-sister is autistic and I SO SHOULD NOT HAVE TOLD ANYONE THAT. I think they are looking to label him that immediately because it's easy but he's NOT autisitc, _(@#$ & *!_@#)($ & *#) & %$)!*@ *whew* I'm okay now. =) ~~ Amber ~~
Guest guest
On the subject of SID , Apraxia, vs Autism.....what are the differences.... We had the boys evaluated in the summer for PDD ( autism) because of speech delays and lack of eye contact.....they refused to diagnose them because they didn't fit the criteria.........too advanced in other areas and socially responsive......though sometimes you do have to coerce them.....LOL Just interested in the differences. We have also been hearing alot of verbal apraxia, and SID.....wish they would make up their minds.....In our case a diagnosis will only help to get them resources; as far as we are concerned they are simply Aidan & Devlin....nothing more or less......Perfect.....Beautiful.....Ours Hugs, , MOM to Aidan & Devlin former 30 weeker preemies, now 2 years, global delays, NO speech!! MOMMY desperate to hear the word. , Mom to Aidan & Devlin, 30 weekers, now 2 years, IUGR, TTTS, Apnea (resolved), Bradycardia (resolved), ROP (resolved), pulmonary Stenosis, intrahepatic portal shunt (liver now resolved), delayed in every area ( global delays), speech delays...now looking into apraxia...... But HAPPY, BEAUTIFUL baby boys.....a constant inspiration and source of joy to their parents.
Guest guest
way to vent amber.....!!!!! i went through all those labels when we were searching for a diagnosis for my son matthew. i refused to accept all of them and kept searching and going to numerous evaluations. he finally received a diagnosis of verbal apraxia, and with that i was satisfied. keep fighting off those diagnosis' if you don't agree, you know best..you can feel it in your gut! vent anytime.............!!!!
