Date: 01 Feb 2002 23:07:01 PST Roxanne, where did you get the idea breastfeeding would prevent apraxia? I have never heard that. I breastfed my son completely (no bottles) and he has verbal apraxia. I think breastfeeding is great for babies but it shouldn't be that painful- uncomfortable yes but not painful. If the baby latches on wrong you need to put a finger in his mouth to break the suction, take him off and reposition. If he has been latching on wrong for a long time you may need to stop nursing for a little while until your nipples heal. It's frustrating but sometimes it takes a few tries to get the baby on correctly even after months of nursing. Great as nursing is it isn't good for your baby to have you in pain. I had a hard time nursing my first son (I got breast infections 3 times). The best advice I got was to give it 6 weeks before giving up. By then I quit getting the infections and ended up nursing him until 13 months. Good luck and take care of yourself.
