Guest guest
Joann -- I am also from NJ and we are beginning this discussion with my district for this summer. This is what I have learned (and if I am incorrect, other NJ parents will chime in). Summer programs are know as " Extended School Year (ESY) " and they can be part of the child's IEP. You can get information from NJ's spec ed web site (sorry, I don't have a link). In our district (all NJ?) the services 'year' goes from July through June and therefore ESY services are actually the " beginning " of the services for a school year. Our district insists that the primary criteria for approving ESY is " recoupment " (regression more than the normal special ed child). The NJ State site documents other criteria which can (should?) be considered. Start talking to your district NOW. Make sure that your IEP for next year is done <before> June so you will have time to figure this out. Margaret...'s Mom
Guest guest
Hi Joann, I asked my son's school this same question. They have an extended summer program which does offer speech therapy and ot also. I asked them if they offered speech during the times school was not in session. The case worker did not know but is going to find out. I know this doesn't help you at the moment but when I find out I will post the answer I get. Just wanted to let you know someone else is checking into the same thing. Guest guest
Hi - If you guys live in New Jersey, Montclair College has an intense speech summer program to help kids with any speech program. Contact them early. Call the English Department and they will refer you to the appropriate person. Hope this helps, JOYA
