Guest guest
Hi--I have an IEP meeting in 2 weeks and have a question. My has verbal and motor apraxia and possibly autism. Lately his self stimulating behaviors have greatly increased. (He claps his hands in a circular motion around his face.) I feel like he is in his own little world when he does this. I just want to grab him and make him stop but then he gets angry. His preschool teacher also mentioned to me that it has become more freqent esp. during free time or unstructured time. My question is this: Is their therapy for this and if so what kind of therapist can help us with the behavior aspects of this? Will the school system be able to provide this? Thanks Zwick
Guest guest
Hi , At my last iep meeting I asked them to provide a behavior specialist and they did without batting an eye. She specializes in kids with autism. I was so thrilled, I only knew to ask for this because I found a website that recommended it-I think it was a childrens hospital in Ohio. Thank God for the internet. I hope this helps. Guest guest
Hello I know this kind of behaviour is worrying but my personal theory, and it is only personal and probably flies in the face of all wisdom, is that it is the nearest our children can get to the therapy they actually need, and that we should be helping them develop this urge, making the assumption that it is healthy but needs directing. My sons have dyspraxia and since they started an intensive physiotherapy course involving things like spinning and hand to hand crossing the body exercises, they have improved beyond recognition. The only time we have seen hand flapping in the last year has been when we haven't been doing the exercises regularly. Guest guest
Hi , It sounds like maybe because it is free time he shuts down because maybe he cannot motor plan what he wants to do so this is a coping mechanism or he is looking for a certain stimulus. Occupational therapy would probably be helpful. Just a Mom's thoughts! denise > Hi--I have an IEP meeting in 2 weeks and have a question. My has verbal and motor apraxia and possibly autism. Guest guest
You can ask speech therapists to address this in therapy because it is an inappropriate form of communication. Pragmatics therapy has many behavior modification lessons. Best wishes! [ ] Re: Therapy for Behavior??
