Guest guest
Barbara, I too live in a rural area and I had trouble finding out about EI services 2 yrs ago. It is really the EI representatives job to distribute flyers and I have been in contact with her numerous times about that subject even though ds has been out of her age group for most of this time. In our community there is only one clinic with 2 branches and although some people commute into nearby cities for services almost everyone at one point or another use these clinics. I have really pushed both verbally at clinic (including interrupting staff when I overheard patients requesting EI services and staff claims there are none) and pushing EI person to also communicate services (she claims she has talked to them and sent flyers but they don't put up). However I have noticed flyers in elementary school and store fronts where they did not use to be so progress is being made. If every parent who utilizes EI takes it upon themselfs to promote EI awareness hopefully soon no one will slip through the cracks. Guest guest
Dawn, I'm so glad you responded to my message because I meant to say early intervention for apraxia (and apraxia in general). There is little to no knowledge of it in my area (thank heavens for the internet). There had been mention of flyers being made to raise awareness of apraxia with doctors and others. That's really what I was hoping to help do. You're right about word-of-mouth being important in promoting EI awareness. I'd like to see some of the more conventional doctors promote it also to parents who just don't " get it " (one of whom is an acquaintance). It kills me to see her child so obviously struggling with gross motor skills.
