Guest guest
Hello - Everyone have been very helpful in the past but it is that time of year now, IEP meeting in 3 days, HELP... I Read that Mainstreaming is going to a general classroom a " portion " of the day? Is that true??? Can you get the C.S.T. send your child to a general pre-k class pulled out for speech and maybe OT and not go to special ed pre-k?????? I have twins and I do not want them in a special ed pre-k for the 3rd year (they miss the kindergarten cut-off) they go to a general classroom 1/2 day without an aid the the teacher says they are doing wonderful!! I want them in the big class (of around 30 kids) in a general classroom next year full-time to see how they handle it, My husband and I feel they REALLY are ready, but pulled- out for speech. Did anyone every experience this?? But our C.S.T. says only part day because she wants them seperated this year, but it is not our fault our town does not have 2 special ed teacher to accomadate them so they want one in special ed pre-k in mornings and they other in a general classroom in the mornings and than switch at lunchtime???? I HATE THE IDEA....... WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK????????? JOYA111@...
Guest guest
I don't know much about how IEPs are handled in your area Joya, but I'd suggest contacting an advocacy group in your area and getting some support. They've helped me out in the past. Here in Oregon the parent has the right to make the decision unless the school district can PROVE otherwise. I've had to get an independent evaluation (school district paid) once before with my autistic son and even then the final call was mine because Mark had shown that he made gains in both placements. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the " I " in IEP stands for individualized. Even if you have twins, they are individuals and should be treated as such. You are right; it's not your fault, or problem for that matter, that you live in a small district. Unless the district has proof that either of your twins cannot learn in the environment you request they must put them in full inclusion if you request. That's what " LRE " least restrictive environment talks about in IDEA. Put your foot down and be strong and fight for their rights, especially if you have proof that their needs can be met in an inclusive program (with pullout speech). Good luck...don't back down. I am one of those people that tries to please everyone all of the time and I have had to hire an attorney once. It was a tough situation for us all. Even then though, we were able to work something out without having to file due process. Hopefully you have a good team of people who want what is best for your children. I will say from experience as both a parent and a teacher, I do believe it is critical to start in full inclusion and work toward more restrictive environments as needed. Children rise to what is expected of them and I believe they should have the opportunity to succeed in a regular classroom if at all possible. Tammy Re: [ ] HELP-IEP ISSUE!!! Guest guest
Also, DO NOT LET THE SCHOOL TELL YOU WHAT THEY WANT, it is what YOU want. They MUST provide the APPROPRIATE education for EACH CHILD. IF you want them in the same class or whatever They MUST provide it. Or pay to send them elsewhere at THEIR expense where the appropriate education will be met.
Guest guest
Thank you. I am really nervous. My kids pre-k teacher is calling me every night telling me how hard she works with my kids and how beneficial it is to keep them in special ed, ugh, 2 nights in a row she is calling me at home. OK, thank you very much, I will contact Deb. JOYA
Guest guest
Dear Joya, While my son is not 3 until may, and my first IEP meeting isn't until the first of may, I would not appreciate them calling me at home. I hope you are documenting everything including phone conversations. I do not know if it is ok for the teacher to be calling you. Eileen --- Joya111@... wrote: > Thank you. I am really nervous. Guest guest
AMEN to that and also remember they MUST provide the APPROPRIATE education for each child in the LEAST RESTRICTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT. Guest guest
An invaluable resource to me has been the following website: http://www.wrightslaw.com/ And just keep in mind that the IEP is not " over " when you leave the meeting - you get to review, edit and then sign if you agree. One final note - make sure that you get an " adult-sized " chair to sit in. I had one meeting where I was sitting at the kindergarten table in a child's chair and the teacher was sitting above me - didn't make that mistake again! Also, someone once told me that I should remember that no matter how many people were there, I had 51% of the vote because nothing would move forward unless I agreed with it. Good Luck! > OK GUYS, it only THURSDAY and MY IEP is MONDAY, but I am sooo consumed in > this IEP, by Sunday I am going to be lunatic!!! Guest guest
Funny how you bring up signing the IEP...here in Oregon they don't have a spot for you to sign that you agree or disagree. This has changed from a year ago. Now it says, " I have participated in the development of this IEP " and you're supposed to sign that. I guess too many people wouldn't sign or something...
