Guest guest
Liz, You most certainly have a right to hold your dd back even if that is not teachers recommendation. This is a big topic (among Mom's)this time of year at our pre-school. We are lucky ds b-day in October misses cutoff date by 10 days so I don't have to make decision. But if he was suppose to go I would hold him back. Not because of speech(he is talking really well now) but things like you said. He can't sing ABC song(maybe the apraxia), if you show him letters he is pretty good at recognizing(capitals anyway) but can't say in order without seeing, and he can not count past five consistently(pre-school lists he can count to 10 but I don't count unless he can do it each time.) I'm not even sure he could pass the K requirements(did your daughter???). He still parallel plays for the most part and is generally immature. In my 4th graders class there are at least 6 kids who didn't start K until 6 so more parents are waiting for whatever reason.I know a lady who is facing having her 3rd grader left back. School wants to keep pushing him along and he keeps getting further behind. It is much harder on child to be help back in higher grades. I will also keep ds in K 2 yrs if he needs it. After watching my 2 LD brothers and older ds is NVLD I can tell you strong reading skills are essential for academic success. Good luck in your decision.
