Guest guest
Dawn, Thank you so much for sharing this with us! As the mother of a 3.5 year old son, it is encouraging to know there may be hope. Sometimes it seems everything is just going SO SLOW that I could scream. He is now starting once in a while to make the consonant and vowel sounds (puh - eye for pie) in speech therapy without having to be prompted for each sound separately. --- daalbe <daalbe@...> wrote: > Two years ago my 4.5 ds could only say " mom " . Guest guest
Has your son been assessed at all by any medical professionals? If not, this needs to be seen to right away. Tell us where you are located and maybe someone can point you in the right direction. You ought to make an appointment with your family doctor in the meantime, and look for speech assessment in your area. Do you have a Health Department in your area you could call to get referrals? > dear, > can you write something detail on this? my son who > sems to be absolutely normal is not speaking more than > a few words. Guest guest
Suzi, I probably am harder on apraxic ds than was on older ds who talked on time. Any misprononcings or syntax errors we stop and I have him repeat them correctly. I am sure with older ds I just let it go and figured he was talking like a 4 yr old. But when he was first diagnosed I researched everything I could about apraxia. His 1st therapist at age 2 didn't understand the difference between verbal and oral apraxia. I read it on internet and explained it to her. When he transitioned to the school system 6 months later I got to know speech therapist real well. From boards I saw that most kids were getting shorter 3 x week therapys and because we live in rural area he only qualified for 2X (for about 9 months of it) and 1 X the rest. So I convinced therapist to work with him twice a day (when he really started talking at 3) and when he would miss sessions due to no school or field trips or would arrange with speech to bring him in another time that week. I also had her give me sheets expaining sounds he was working on and how and we would work on that during week. They have a notebook that I assume was set up for communication of pre-school teachers and therapists but I also used that to find out what he did each day and to write notes to speech therapist. For summer I asked for home therapy ideas (since he didn't qualify for summer therapy) and she ended up giving me the apraxic worksheets she had been using. They were well documented and we had great success using them. In other words I was real assertive and probably thought to be a pain in the butt. Dawn >Congrats! Guest guest
You may want to look at this group child_language/ Many of its members live in India and may be able to help you find a good place to start treatment. Good Luck. > yeah, the specilist says he has to undergo speech > therapy and special programme. next week the > programme will start. in all his activities he seems > to so normal! i am in Hyderabad,India, > there are so many good hospitals, but i do not know > which is better. thanks. What caught my eye in your post was your son's date of birth because its the same as my daughter's. She had very few words until the age of four (about 20, tops). But with speech therapy and the continuation of what she'd learn at speech being carried through at home (along with EFA's)has made a huge difference! We started speech therapy at age four and added occupational therapy at age 4.7 (for sensory integration) and now she can say 5 to 6 word sentences. At age four she was just starting to put 2 to 3 words together. We've been told its a language disorder and / or auditory processing but not apraxia, which I use to think matter but now I just want her to be able to communicate and keep up with her peers. She still has trouble with demand questions or trying to repeat new words. For example, we have fox in the area but have never really talked about them except when I read about them in a story. Well, I told her one had been in our yard the other day, and she tried to say fox but couldn't, it came out like " v..ox " she kept trying but couldn't say it. She can say box but couldn't get the " f " sound with it; she can say the " f " in fish or in food though. She still can't say milk but says " muolk " . At home we've been trying to do a lot of silly rhyming. I do silly rhymes and then she'll try to repeat them but when she starts to get frustrated we stop and try something like " I Spy something blue on the counter " . Starting speech therapy will really make a world of difference. We also used sign language at age 3 which helped alot with her frustration and reduced the number of tantrums she was having. Good luck. Audrey
