Guest guest
Carol, I know what you mean. Do you have private therapists that get progress from your son? Perhaps you can show the school that the inconsistency and lack of progress/special skills of the school therapists are lacking andt therefore, they should pay for the private therapists. If your child is only in the special ed program for the therapies then I would pull him out, provided you think that the regular class is otherwise appropriate for him. Can you go and check out the class and perhaps meet with a regular ed teacher who can meet with your child? This way you can get a better idea unless you already know that the class would be fine for him. Carolyn
Guest guest
CALLING ALL PARENTS should I pull my son out of his individual special ed. therapies and just try him as a regular ed. kid in his kindergarten class?? it became very clear to me in the IEP update meeting(to close the second qrtr) that the therapists just do not know how to treat/educate him.......he has had excellent therapy in the past and he has had poor therapy in the past and after this school working with him for TWO YEARS I think I can safely say they just don't know where to go with him.....isn't it just a waste of time...his and theirs to keep him in if they don't know how to help him? Please write back and let me know........feeling very confused after being up half the night thinking about this.....CArol
Guest guest
I had a couple of questions about your letter. If I understand correctly he is in a regular class being pulled out for therapies. Is the therapy harming or regressing or upsetting him? Or is it just ineffective? Is he receiving therapy outside of school? If you pulled him out of school therapy would you get therapy outside? I think the best scenario would be regular class with therapy outside of the school, but if you can't get it outside, I think that any therapy would be better than none, unless it is doing some damage. Maybe you could pull up some therapy protocols for apraxia and give it to the therapists- it is possible that they really don't know what to do and are being defensive to cover themselfes. Try going to the school district (go above their heads) and talk to them about your ineffective therapy. Good luck with your son. >CALLING ALL PARENTS >should I pull my son out of his individual special ed. therapies and just try him as a regular ed. kid in his kindergarten class?? it became very clear to me in the IEP update meeting(to close the second qrtr) that the therapists just do not know how to treat/educate him.......he has had excellent therapy in the past and he has had poor therapy in the past and after this school working with him for TWO YEARS I think I can safely say they just don't know where to go with him.....isn't it just a waste of time...his and theirs to keep him in if they don't know how to help him? Guest guest
Hello, I would never pull him out of school and putting him in Kindergarden is not the answer either, in my opinion anyway. Plus you release the school from all responsibility. I don't know what state your in, but in mine, if the school can't provide therapy/services/teachers/aide, (what your child needs) They have to pay for his tuition and transportation to another public school SDC program that does. And you get to visit this school first, with your private therapist and whomever else you would like to bring along. You agree or disagree with that particular school until you find a program at a school that you like. You may also choose a private school, it of course would have to have some kind of LD program to qualify. If none of that works out, if you know of a therapist or facility that has service after school hours, then they would have to bus him from school to that office and pay for those services. If the facility would let the therapist come to school during hours that would be even better that way he wouldn't even receive the 30 minutes or so of bad instruction from the regular ed teacher.
