Wait and see?

I was kicking myself for not listening to all of you when the doc said " wait and

see. " We waited until was 12 months old and there was no curve change, but

the doc offered a prescription for a brace at that time.

Today we finally got an opinion from a Mehta doc at Shriner's. And again, we

were told " wait and see. " That's unusual, right? is 13 months old but is

showing signs that he may get better or may get worse.

I would jump right into casting if I weren't so afraid of skin sores on my

fair-skinned baby!

Any advice on how we would know if things were going to resolve without

intervention?

Thanks,

Delinda

Which shriners? Did you use the brace? What was his RVAD & degree of

curve? Sorry if you said these things already but I don't remember...If

you got this advice from an experienced Mehta trained doc then it is

probably sound advice. We cast at SLC & the doc there casted my son even

though his RVAD was only 10 because his experience told him the rotation

of 15-20 indicated a progressive curve & he was already 19 months old.

Its so hard to decide what to do. Do you go back again in 2-3 months?

I agree as well when it comes to the concern over being fair skinned. My 6 month

old was casted last month at 5 1/2 months for the first time. Unlike myself,

husband and my other children she is very fair skinned. Reddish hair and blue

eyes as well.

Ask yourself this- what does your gut tell you? For my Ella my gut said to find

the best doc I could and push for a cast. Her RVAD was only a 10, but she's

casted. If you're concerned by what you're told, absolutely get a second

opinion. You'll never kick yourself for double checking. You'll kick yourself by

not.

Sorry I'm not more help.

Good luck!

Philadelphia Shriners. He is at 34*. We booked an appointment for his first cast

and he'll be x-rayed again that morning. We'll have to make the final decision

then about what to do. If the curve is worse, we'll probably cast. If it is the

same or better... Ah, I just don't know!

I'm glad to hear that skin sores are not an issue for some of you!

I would totally recommend casting! My 5 year old jaylin got his first cast dec.23,2011 and he was 34 out of cast, 13 in cast. We had to take him back yesterday because he out grew his cast so they cut it off of him and took another X-ray and he is down 21 degrees :):):) he will get his second cast next tuesday march 27, 2012 I'm excited to see where he will be in cast this time around! My sons curve was 32* with 15/20* rotation an RVAD of 10. @19mos. We

choose to cast if your son has rotation or an RVAD over 20 my advice would

be to cast... just my 2 cents

I'm w Amber. 34 degrees is high enough. Your child is the perfect age. Don't

miss a chance to permanently correct his curve! I'm very surprised they want to

wait and see.... Probably bc it's stable. Read the online info on the site to

help you decide. Don't be to scared to try casting.... You might regret it later

and trust me living w regret is a hard thing to do.
