I do think they do better each time.  I know our daughter Joy didn't have as hard of a time getting around like she did with the first cast.    She did have more problems with anesthesia.  I always make sure to tell them to give her anti-nausea meds b/c she has such a hard time with it.  I don't know if your child had problems or not with that.  Also, since you all have gone through it once you at least know more this time around what to expect.  I know I always get more nervous of the unknown.  Praying it all goes well and the adjustment into the next cast will be much easier!

Watching her struggle is so heartbreaking, yet I know it's so worth it.

I'm wondering if she'll do better this time when the cast is applied since she'll only be cast-free for a few days before #2 is put on. What has everyone else's experiences been? Is it the same struggle for them to adapt? Is it the anesthesia that causes them to be uncomfortable? Anyone that's had a very young child casted- what are your thoughts on this? I'm bracing myself for you to say it's still awful :)

Thanks,

My son wasn't super young 20 mos when we started. His second cast was the

easiest one so far. We are now in the third. He just wanted to get down

and play & after about an hour when we let him he just took off running.

A little off on balance but it only took about 5 min not 2 weeks. The 3rd

cast was hard because he had some conjestion and the tube really stirred

that up. He didn't bounce right out of bed like before but not because of

the cast. Best of luck it " should " be better this time.

Brayden isn't as young as Ella (he was 17 months for cast 2), but he bounced back really quick, almost like he was never out of the cast for a week.

Hey , my daughter is now 17 months in cast 5...we started around 7 months

as well. I think each time has been easier on all of us! She still seems very

tired and possibly sore the first few days but by day 3 she's completely back to

normal! I give her a little Motrin those first couple of days and that seems to

help! Good luck with everything!!

Thanks for the replies everyone! Just the thought that it could go even a little

bit better is a comfort.

Thank you :)

hey , Ella will be just fine! She is at her age of learning and moving all kinds of ways/gaining control of being in this world and the cast isnt making it any better! However, it gets easier. For ex, my son, casted at about 14months struggled because he was just learning to walk but once he overcame that " milestone " , he seemed very comfortable, as much could be , the second time around. He got inguinal hernia, I believe from struggling with the cast despite my effort to help him overcome some obstables. It doesnt get easier for us ,but them being so young, they don't know better. It just makes her more of a fighter, and pretty sure, only us as parents will remember. Because it is no fun when you get older, dealing with body image, friends etc. Just keep her cool, let her keep her independence, and push toward the cast finish line, brace start:) Good luck

Hey --We started casting Logan at 9 months old. The first one was a struggle, but he adapted quickly. With each subsequent casting, he got better and faster about adapting. It does get frustrating. I wont lie. But as they get through each day, so do you. I think its tough on little ones, but they are tougher.Give her and yourself some time. Breathe. Breathe again.
