We went from Risperdal to Catapris and have been very comfortable with the positive results, no side effects.... Kate MyersOn Sat, Feb 4, 2012 at 4:29 PM, shouttothenorth2 <shouttothenorth2@...> wrote:

Joe gained 20+lbs on Risperdal within 3 months.  Catapris is generally a pill or a patch - our pharmacist compounds into a flavored liquid. No  - weight gain is not a side effect & Joe lost his resoerdal weight within 4 months of stopping the drug.

Initially, Catapris caused a lot of drowsiness - 1/2 tsp in the am  1/2 in the eveningLessens anxiety, over all more calm, easier sleep etc... Believe me, I did not want to be a mom who medicates her child.  But I am.  For us, the medication is a important tool.

My son was started on Risperidal 0.5mg just 4days ago,

I was told it will cause some sleepiness 4the first few days that he might have

to stay @ home and skip school!

He didn't skip school, in fact he performed better than when he was using

Tenex 4his behaviors.

I was supposed to give him a tablet in the morning and2@night,

Am just giving one a.m. and one @nite b4 bed time.

What I have noticed so far is the increased appetite as well as frequent hiccups

which are less today!

I was told that it might cause muscle contractions aka ticks or twitches and

So I guess the hiccups kindda came under that!

My son doesn't take tegretol but I have used it myself 3times a day 4 a

period of 3yrs 4 focal Sensory seizures following a car accident with head

injury and brain hemorrhage back in the late 90s.

I remember the weight gain but not the sleepiness.

Best of luck :)

Risperdal vs. Tegretol

Does anyone have any feedback in regards to either of these medications. My son

has been on both but the dr. is considering putting him back on Tegretol because

of the weight gain that can be caused by Risperdal which he has been on now a

few years. I believe both med's can cause sleepiness although I think Tegretol

is a lot worse with the sleepiness.

Thanks,

Hi Kate, how old is Joe? My son is only going to be 11 and is about 170 lbs. at

about 5' 4 " inches tall. He's solid and strong. He's been on med's for years

and I agree, I don't want him on med's but his Dr. doesn't seem to think he can

ever go off of med's. I tend to agree because of his behavior when I give him

the med's late. I've also been on med's for years for OCD/Anxiety. I think

it's all in the genes. When he was even younger he we all walked on egg shells

in the home and he can destroy anything in a matter of seconds...ugh, it's not

easy. Thanks for your response. I'm going to look up the catapris. :)

Hi again, I've never heard of daytanna either. Does Joe have any issues with

anxiety? My son's dr. doesn't want to give a stimulant drug right now cause his

Anxiety is so high.

The catapris decreased very aggressive tantrums form 3 or 4 times a week to once every 4 months. The daytrsnna gives Joe focus and the ability to concentrate. Joe is verbal and is close to age appropriate academics. Joe is better at social interactions. Joe is maturing. KateOn Feb 4, 2012, at 6:28 PM, "shouttothenorth2" <shouttothenorth2@...> wrote:

I'm so thankful for these posts, my son Jack has been on dispersal for about 2 years. 1.5 in the am and 1.5 before bed. It seemed to help fur awhile, but his tantrums are more frequent and much more aggressive. He also takes 5 mg if adderal in the morning for ADHD. I'm at a loss for what to do. Gas anyone heard about the long term effects if risperidal and involuntary muscle movements after long term use, like 25 or 30 years. That is what our doc said. Ben was on Adderal- I hated it- messed with his dopamine (the pleasure chemical

in the brain) and made him aggressive and giddy. His school was calling me

practically everyday to please pick him up. I will never put him on a

ADHD/stimulant drug again- and Adderal seemed to be the worst of them (we've

tried ritalin, concerta and I think even statera. Think about it- it's

essentially 'speed'. Now, it seems it may have inhibited with his working memory

(connections between learning and applying information) Tenex (for high blood

pressure) worked much better. But! Everyone is different! Discuss with your

doctor about the possibility!

Ben did gain lots of weight on risperdal, but once I cut out fast food, sugary

drinks and donuts, he grew into his weight and is hw proportionate. Other than

the prolactin spike, things went well.

I also learned to offer lots of fish and make sure he had plenty of protein

everyday. It worked for us.
