Guest guest
Thanks for the feedback Sheila, I don't know what prolactin is... My son is due bloodwork but he's got these chubby arms and i'm afraid to go through that. My son is almost 11 and he is also on Zoloft with the risperdal. He's on .5 mg. 3x a day if needed. Dr. said that tegretol won't cause the weight gain.... LISA > > > We did well on risperdal, 1 mg in am, 2 at night, but at 13 his prolactin spiked. Now he's on Abilify and Zoloft- doing well... That is I think what I see now is plain old teenage boy stuff. Watch out coming off risperdal though. I still have nightmares remembering what that was like. Next time I want more medical oversight. >
Guest guest
Now that comment just gave me goose pumps :S What happens when you stop it? Doesn't tapering the dose help? Guest guest
Hi Sula, I didn't write the post your responding to although I don't think you have anything to worry about at this point. Any drug you'd usually go off of gradually. I've only had bad experiences when I don't give my kid the risperdal. I was just concerned with his weight gain...All med's have side effects...we'll have to ask Sheila just exactly what she meant happened when her son went off risperdal. Maybe he went off to quickly? Recently I sat in a social problem class that talked about addictions and now I have far more respect what my son went through. Bear in mind, we had to take him off of it, a growing young man should not have an excess of prolactin (the same hormone that makes women's breasts get ready for babies), but my son was at times, for a lack of a better term, psychotic. Everyone is different, and he was on it a long time. Risperdal served us well. But, it necessarily changed his brain to help him deal with his autistic symptoms and better support him in school. When we took him off of it, even though we did it slowly, we essentially expected his brain to support itself. We would never do that to heroin addicts and even alcoholics can and do die when they go cold turkey without professional help. As a non drinker, non drug user (I never even smoked a cigarette), I didn't get what my son may have went through- that is until this class. My son's school social worker tried to tell me, but I trusted the doctors. I still trust them- but will be more of an advocate next time, because as we all know- med changes happen. BTW- he's still on 1mg at night. I'll probably have to take him off that when the most recent test come back. But, that how bad it got- 3 months later, and I'm still unwilling to take him off that last one until the blood work indicate it's necessary. ------------------------------ On Sat, Feb 4, 2012 4:53 PM MST Sulaf Lutfi wrote: >Now that comment just gave me goose pumps :S >What happens when you stop it? >Doesn't tapering the dose help? > >Sent from my BlackBerry by AT & T > > risperadal > > > > > > >We did well on risperdal, 1 mg in am, 2 at night, but at 13 his prolactin spiked. The behaviors seemed worse, because it was both home and school this time. Still, I remember going through a lot of anxiety when the doc said he wanted to put Ben on a antipsychotic in the first place. We even had a mild argument because I dared to question him (thank goodness he's no longer caring for him) but, now I realize Ben needed it. And when his brother died a few years later, (totally unrelated) it was our saving grace. Any drug has the potential of negative side effects, sometimes necessiting withdrawal. But, I bear witness that when a drug needs to be changed, we need to be even more patient and realize our kids may be going through something just as traumatic as going off a highly addictive substance. Don't be afraid or too proud to ask for more assistance and perhaps respite even so that you can remain an effective parent. Doctors, not even parents with experience, are your best source of info, but you have every right to be as imformed as possible. I do know of at least one person who has been on risperdal for a very long time with no major issues. ------------------------------ On Sat, Feb 4, 2012 8:15 PM MST Sulaf Lutfi wrote: >Hi sheila, >Sorry 2be persuasive but was that because of a high dose for a prolonged period of time or is that the case whatever the dose? >I also wanted to ask if he went back to the same behavior with the same severity? >Am just worried about my son who's just turned 7yrs and became so aggressive in his behavior, mostly attempting to hurt himself out of frustration, and all that just overnight while still using Tenex supposedly for hyperactivity and milder attempts to hit his head etc. >I was told that his aggravated tantrums might have resulted from the additive effects of the Tenex + Deplin + vit B12 injections (these 3 were replaced by Risperadal) while the rest of a long list of supplements remained! >I just don't want them to surprise me 2morrow and say whatever else might happen is a side effect of Risperadal or resulted from stoppin it :S > >Sent from my BlackBerry by AT & T > > risperadal > > > > > > > > > > > > > >We did well on risperdal, 1 mg in am, 2 at night, but at 13 his prolactin spiked.
