Guest guest
Hi , Sara forwarded the e-mail you sent her from the mom who's child was refused therapy to address feeding issues. School districts differ significantly on how they handle " feeding issues " . My first question would be do these issues present a safety risk if he is eating in school???? If the answer to that question is yes, the school assumes a major liability if they do not address feeding. If they are nutritive feeding issues, many districts feel this is medical and they won't touch it. I have sometimes recommended that parents talk about the need for proper nutrition in order to have the energy to focus and learn. In addition, the issue of being an intregral part of a group and relating to peers during mealtime, snacktime etc. can be a problem for some children with " feeding issues " . As for " who addresses " the feeding concerns, in some districts the OT is responsible and in others the SLP is responsible. If the child uses similar patterns for speech and feeding the SLP should probably be addressing the issues. I know this input is vague, but the information from the parent was vague. Let me know if you have further questions! Lori Overland CCC/SLP Innovative Therapy International www.oromotorsp.com CHERAB Advisor
