You can cut scobies, yes, they will still grow babies, and if you absolutely

have to have a pretty baby, and you are out of the stage where it is still

adapting to your house, I have heard that if you weight down the mother scoby

with a smaller jar that has been discenfected in your larger jar, it will

produce a pretty even baby scoby, but if it is still adjusting, it may take a

number of batches before it produces a really nice looking scoby, particularly

if if was sent to you from any distance, in which case, I don't think the

weighing down of the mother scoby will help. Time heals all " wounds " in this

case. Don't know your situation. Jeani

I have a scoby which has grown bigger and I need to reduce the amount in that

cut it in half and take out each half? Also, the scoby I got was beautiful: it

looked like a small round of cheese. My scoby is **ugly** and everyone is scared

of my kombucha tea. How can I grow it so that it will look like the original one

I got?Thanks!!!!

Yes...you can certainly cut the SCOBY in half, won't hurt it at all.

What is it about your SCOBY that you think is 'ugly'?

However...if you goal is to grow a flat pancake type SCOBY, you'll have the

best chance of that if you strain your starter liquid before adding it and

weight down the mother SCOBY with something glass, like an 8 oz canning jar.

She will not then be able to jumble the forming baby and you'll have a

better chance at a pancake baby.

This is what I do with my one gallon brew where I grow the babies I give

away...

All I can say is - ugly scobies make the best KT - just my humble opinion...

but it seems as thought those are the most well-seasoned.

Are you really getting ugly scobies still, ? Wow, I get some beauties,

most of them are, in fact. I have to say though that my huge scoby in the crock

is not very pretty, but it seems to be getting nicer looking with each batch, as

I have only been brewing with it for about a month and a half, maybe a little

longer. You just stunned me!! lol!! Jeani Ask Rodrick-his was a beaut that I

sent to him!

Hey Jeani - well, I generally pull the baby off and put it into a scoby motel

incase someone else wants one. I keep the " ugly " one for myself! It gets all

brown and stringy.... but it keeps on making beautiful babies!

I just hope your first batch with it turns out good, as mine was decidedly

yucky!!! But it was sent during a different time of year, and so hopefully you

won't experience what I had to with the scoby coming from so far away!! Jeani

What did you do with it if it was yucky? Throw the tea out? That's what I'm

about to do with the last batch I tried with the first scoby. I has kind of

a chemical, metallic smell.

Yes, it didn't get acidic, and yet it wasn't sweet, either to speak of, don't

recall it having any funky smells though! lol!! I also threw out the very

thin, uglier than get out baby scoby it formed after 14 days of brewing at a

constant 82 degrees F. Hmmm. True confessions of the kombucha enthusiast?!!!

I had to laugh at some of the replies on this thread!

The scoby I got from Gayle was a 'Holey' scoby, kinda like swiss

cheese. She was a bit too large for the container I was brewing in, so

I tore her in half. Other than this nasty looking dark tail she

developed (which, btw, was easily removed when I pulled the scoby out

between batches), the baby scoby was not bad looking.

I didn't want to waste the other half, so I made up a small batch of

orange pekoe (I usually use green tea), and poured it into a few small

glass bowls. I tore the other half into chunks about the size of a

50-cent piece, dropped them in and covered the bowls. The other day I

took a peek at the babies, and found the big mama and her first baby

in the green tea are growing a homely youngster that is trying to

climb out of the jar.

The small chunks in the glass bowls are growing the prettiest,

smoothest babies! I don't know if it's the difference in tea type, jar

size, or mama scoby size, so I guess I'll have to experiment!

Sometimes the reason you may get a holey scoby would be when you go from one

size jar to another. I can remember that some of my first scobies had holes in

them because the smaller scoby pushed up against the baby and so the part in the

middle that was touching the baby scoby was thinner, and when you separate them,

because it is thinner in that area, it can create a hole. Nothing wrong with it

other than a hole in the head-hah!!! It sounds like the brew with the green tea

has some overly excited yeast causing it to climb out of the bowl to try to get

away from it-hah! I have had this happen, the next batch is usually just fine.

However, I did throw out the baby scoby on that one, as she wasn't too pretty

and was deformed as well, being in the shape of a bowl, and since I didn't want

her offspring to follow in her footsteps, I just threw it out. Jeani
