Guest guest
Over the years I have had parents ask me how Khalid weathered through kindergarten. I have always been happy to share Khalid's experience. I have found for each child, this is a personal decision. I feel parents should follow your heart and find what best benefits your own child's certain needs. I found the answers never came easy. Khalid my oldest apraxic son, now 15.7 years, started his kinder years close to age 6. I too had my fears, concerns and wanted the best in meeting Khalid's needs. While searching for his options, which were few. I had heard through my sister-in-law, about a fabulous teacher in her district. This teacher's reputation had sold me and had hope that she would be that special teacher for my son. After my husband, Khalid and I observed and visited her class (more than once) the structure and the stimulating environment were more than any parent could have dreamed. This teacher's focus was on the positive for her students and her purpose was to bring out each child's best and individual strengths. My husband and I were determined that Khalid would be in her class that year. After filling out paperwork with their district, and an interview with the school principle, my request was honored. Khalid was set to go and therefore he would not attend kindergarten within our school district. At that time my son had a severe speech deficit and had not yet been diagnosed with apraxia. I assisted him throughout that year, together he and I attended class daily. I worked closely with Khalid, at school and home and also helped other children when needed. This would resolve any frustration or communication problems for all of us. My presence in turn was most welcomed and appreciated there. Together the teacher and I became a team that would work in Khalid's best interest. What's most wonderful about his teacher, she did not just praise Khalid, she also encouraged him to be a part of the class. She was careful not to put him in any humiliating situations. She was creative, to include and modify her curriculum for Khalid. She taught the children to be careful of their words and to respect him and each other. She had her students so busy, there was no time for teasing. I don't recall to many incidents that year if any. My son enjoyed kindergarten and had a wonderful learning experience. Khalid will soon finish his ninth grade year and this teacher still remains on Khalid's list, as one of his most memorable teachers. After all these years of meeting so many educators, professionals, coaches, that have come into my son's life. I can honestly say throughout the years, they have not all been the best of golden experiences. Yet there are those few amazing people, who truly stand out, whose influence have made the difference for Khalid. For me this teacher is one that remains in this mother's heart forever. Mustafa Mom to Khalid, Jadd and Danya Blessed is the influence of one true, loving human soul on another. ~ Eliot~
