I do continuous brew and so do not often have pretty SCOBYs to send out! You might also try your local Craig's list. As for your 'experiment'. No harm in letting it continue just watch for mold. I don't know what instructions you followed, however... you do have just some type of air permeable cloth over the top, right? Another factor would be the temperature of your basement. Those bottle grown ones can take a month or more....
