Guest guest
My son is monotone and sounds quite " stiff " when he does say a few words. It seems he has trouble just getting a word out. His voice never sounds " fluid " or " flowing " . It is also raspy and hoarse. His is not high pitched or squeaky. It was as an infant, but he had Reflux, which kept his tubes, etc. irritated. Hope this helps, Angi, mom to Katelyn and
Guest guest
Above, in one of my monotone voice replies, there is a cut and paste of a q & a from a link from apraxia kids written by an slp that answers different possible reasons for this. I personally think they have to work so hard to mechanically create the words they cannot also manipulate the voice. Check out the pasted in bit and also the link that ends in ques. > I wish everyone on this list that has a child with some form of apraxia or dyspraxia would respond to this question: > if the quality or tone of the voice of your child is somehow different from the average, IN WHAT WAY IS IT DIFFERENT??? > > we have already had about three say their child's voice is quite MONOTONE > > I would like to say that my child's voice has an odd almost squeak/higher pitched sound to it.....anyone else see this? > > thanks, Carol (mom to Micah,6, and CJ,9 )

Her speech therapist ask at one point, " does she ever show emotion like being excited? It doesn't show in her voice. " She also has a tendency to be too LOUD! LOL We're constantly reminding her to speak softer, but NEVER to be quiet. Audrey
Guest guest
Regarding voice quality --- my son is not monotone. He has lots of inflections in his speech. The only thing I think is different is that he is somewhat squeaky and high pitched at times. Oh and yes he is also very LOUD. He always seems to be yelling especially when he is excited. The more excited he is the louder he is. Lynaugh
Guest guest
I wouldn't say monotone but I would say a higher pitch most of the time. I noticed another boy on this street the same age (4 1/2 -5) with the same higher pitch so I'm not sure if has anything to do with apraxia or not, but I was wondering. I'm curious to see where things go from here. Guest guest
In Answer to the question on my boys voice? I have twins, one whines ALOT and can be very high pitch at times and they other talks with his voice flucuates nicely, but still uses his hands and fingers when he talks because he is still unsure that he is getting his message across to whoever he is talking to. They are 4 1/2yrs old. JOYA
Guest guest
My almost 4 year old son's voice is often very loud. SOmetimes he talks as though he is being coached--for example when he was learning signs and not speaking we worked alot on sentences like " I want_______, please " so now he often says this in a very rehearsed, monotone fashion. I feel he shows emotion in his voice here at home but when in public, his voice becomes very deep and again more monotone. Guest guest
A recent post asked: " I wish everyone on this list that has a child with some form of apraxia or dyspraxia would respond to this question: if the quality or tone of the voice of your child is somehow different from the average, IN WHAT WAY IS IT DIFFERENT??? " My reply: My son's voice is higher pitched than other kids his age (age 4). Guest guest
In response to the question about voice quality. I was the original poster a few days ago about monotone voice. My son's voice is pretty monotone, but high-pitched. Not really squeaky, just has the " sound " like he is asking questions all the time, even when he is just stating something. Does that make sense? You know how when you ask a question, you raise your voice at the end to where the sentence sounds like a question rather than a statement? Well, that is how my son talks all the time. That same " question-sounding " tone, for statements as well as questions.
Guest guest
Lori, your description of your child's voice quality was very good. Actually my daughter can be very high pitch and I was wondering if I was alone. You are very right about the monotone sound when typically developing kids are starting to read. Both of my typically developing boys (now 12 and 8) were montone readers until I taught them to alter their pitch depending upon what the words say. Thanks, Carolyn
Guest guest
Absolutely! Very high babyish talk. I'm thinking that when a younger child learns to talk between the ages of 2/3 years of age they have that high squeeky voice until they mature speech was. I think ours are at that stage just later. I hope with time it'll sound lower and age appropriate. Kerry mom to age 7 apraxic
Guest guest
Voice Quality: My son's voice is very lous aas well. He was very monotone up until 2 yrs ago. When he really concentrates on pronunciation or syntax he gets louder and louder. His new school wants him to have a voice evaluation. Guest guest
I don't notice my daughter talking in monotone or high pitched. Her voice seems to go up and down like it is supposed to. When she askes me a question, it sounds as if it is a question. The exception is when she talks to our dog. She loves dogs and when she talks to him she does get real high pitched.
