Guest guest
I would guess that the smell is probably residue from whatever dish soap your friend used to clean her fermenting container, or the container in which she packaged your SCOBY. Probably, whatever is in there will dilute with each subsequent batch. -Patty > > I just got a baby and some starter tea from a friend of a friend. Cristian, I did read your post first time of posting, but didn't really know whether my response would be helpful to you. I had several days to muse about it now, though, and the conclusion I have come to is, that I personally would be very wary to use that particular starter. It is quite possible that the culture could have been negatively affected by the chemicals/enzymes from the washing powder/softener it got into contact with. My sense of smell is very acute and good, as yours also seems to be. If the smell has caused bad feelings and uncertainty in you or just given you bad vibes, don't use that starter, but try to get a fresh one ASAP. With best wishes for a good outcome of your Kombucha saga. Guest guest
Poor sanitation practice. I usually rinse my containers in hot water and then pour boiling water inside as well as outside. I never use dish detergent for the reason you cite.
