Guest guest
I am wanting to add Hawthorne (exceptional for the heart), Ginseng and other herbs to my KT. What I've not understood is do I add these to my original brew or to the 2nd fermentation so, does anyone do this or have any suggestions? I already use Tulsi (or Holy Basil) flavored teas ( known for its rich antioxidant and adaptogenic properties that are known to promote wellness by building the body¢s immune system, reducing stress and promoting mental clarity.) and I am using Black (good for diabetes) and Green teas for their benefits with really good results. What I am thinking is a brew with all the above in one pot...be kind of like a healthy elixir! What do you think?
Guest guest
...if you are going to add medicinal herbs to your brew, it is best not done during the first ferment. Additives should go in with the second ferment if you are going to do so. It is unknown what additives might do to your SCOBY, so it is always best to leave them to a second ferment unless you are experimenting and keeping SCOBYs aside that have been brewed only in Camelia Sinensis and sugar for future use should anything dire happen during experimentation. Guest guest
I may have to try to add them into the brew. I am known to like adventure and I have enough LARGE SCOBYs that I can take a small peice and make a small brew. Thanks for the information. I still would like to hear from someone that's actually used herbs.
Guest guest
I've made lavendar kombucha using lavendar leaves. I put them in the bottle for second ferment. -Patty > > I still would like to hear from someone that's actually used herbs. >
Guest guest
, Have used a mix of herbal teas with black, orange pekoe, green, white, riohbus with no problems that I am aware of. I heard I should not do it in the first brew, but someone gave me some peach kt that had herbal mixed with regular tea and I have not been able to resist since it was so yummy. The results have seemed lovely without the extra work of a second steeping and mixing before rebottling. I would appreciate someone telling me why it is not good to mix herbs in the first batch if this is true. Perhaps I have reduced the health benefits??? Thanks, Sonja > > I may have to try to add them into the brew. I am known to like adventure and I have enough LARGE SCOBYs that I can take a small peice and make a small brew. Guest guest
The Fu KT I brew is 1/2 and 1/2 with green in the first brew and is delicious! The Tulsi which is Holy Basil with other herbs for flavoring is 3/4 Tulsi to 1/4 green in my first brew. I guess since these are " teas " I don't think of them as herbs. I REALLY want to do some Hawthorne in a brew so I think I will do a single gallon in the next few days to see how it goes.

At the same time, however, you are advised to keep a straight brew or scoby hotel going, to be able to fall back to a plain, uninterfered with tea, just tea with camellia sinensis. It is from this pure stock alone that you should share any scoby and starter juice, because we just do not know what 'alien' effects any non sinensis additives may have, how they could possibly interfere with the bacteria-yeast Kombucha microflora. I don't think they would be really be any adverse effects from the the mix you used for your kombucha fermentation, either for you or your culture, but still, it's good to play it safe by having a plain back-up. Guest guest
hi, Gail.. powerfull medicinel tincture.. what a great idea.. since it takes a long time to make tincture/ extracting its milk/ it may be ok to add in second fermant..and let it stew in KT,or you can boil up root and add to sweet tea..but i have no idea on dosage..but it may intensify..like you say yerba mate does..than again, maybe having it be just soaking in tea, will not releise all its medicine. i would be just sipping KT, and listen to my body.. i am going to try in second ferment first../ picled poke root / bless..jahjet > > hi all, this is for the brewers that use herbs. i wondered if in your experience/opinion does the process of fermenting the herbals to make kt concentrate the strength of the herbs? it seems that yerba mate becomes more intense in flavor when made into kt, is this an actual concentration, or just a taste thing? > my concern is that i am going to make a blend with some poke root in it which is a pretty strong herb, i'm using it for pain and inflammation. when this herb is made as a tincture, the dosage is one drop a few times a day, i am wondering how this would compute for the pot of tea. > any help, opinion, experience is appreciated here. > gail >

Guest guest
thanks, that is a good thought about it may not release in the tea. i will probably boil some down first, i still think i may stick it in a pot, but i may just put it in a bottle since the husband has started drinking kt-yeah!-as well.that is a miracle, by the way.i am not sure yet about how to use the poke root. gail it takes a long time to make tincture/
Guest guest
hey, that is great for him! Portions may be different for him than for you experiment, little at a time. the seeds are toxic, only / if chewed / I am sure the body and the reaction is just medicinal, it would take a lot to have an out of body experience .looking at it the light side! peace..jahjet > > thanks, that is a good thought about it may not release in the tea. i will probably boil some down first, i still think i may stick it in a pot, but i may just put it in a bottle since the husband has started drinking kt-yeah!-as well.that is a miracle, by the way.i am not sure yet about how to use the poke root. > gail > > it takes a long time to make tincture/ >
Guest guest
Howdy Gail, I love the way yerba tastes through kt. Not sure of why, but my strawberry green does the same. Concentrating refers to raising the percentage of an ingredient in a solution, so I don't think that is happening...unless your brews evaporate significantly which mine did during the summer. Poke can hurt, if you get too much. I think jahjet's advice was good on the little at a time. Have you made the tincture yourself? If you know your tincture concentration, you can judge by that what will work in tea and just experiment that way. Try taking a few more drops instead of 1 at a time for starters. Good Luck and Happy Trails! Guest guest
....Dearest Gail! Do you now where to get fresh poke root /for KT in second ferment / Has to be fresh, like dendelion, or they lose potency when drying/ Since i cannot find any growing around here, maybe i should locate seeds, for growing. i see that it grows as weed in the south, how lucky for those living there.I cannot give up on this great root. Well if anyone else have ideas,I greatfully appreciate..Sincerely,Jahjet > > i have a healthy respect for all the mother's herbs, hence my questions. i muscle tested and got a positive response from my body about using the poke, i think i will boil some down, and figure it using that. thanks for the input about the mate, maybe the kt just mellows the flavor of the herbs > gail > > > Poke can hurt, if you get too much. >

Guest guest
mine is dried root from 'mtn rose herbs'. it does grow wild around here, but it is usually by the roadside, and subject to all kind of car exhaust fumes. well, i'm sure it is other places besides the roadway, but i haven't been out in the woods to gather it. i suppose i could get you some in the spring or summer, i will look into finding some when the season gets closer. seeds may be your best bet. i think the dried is going to be pretty strong, it feels 'tingly' gail > ...Dearest Gail! Guest guest
Thanks Gail! Thanks for the hope to get some in future..what i red upon it that it supposed to be used fresh / to make tincture or oil / yes it might be too late in season, and harder to identify without the leaves now, but the roots are good ,collected even in november, fresh root, might be the best from spring or summer..i hear they get huge, and need a truck to hitch on to tug them out, but i am sure they are easier to pull up when younger. Thank You Gail, i will use it dry and find out for myself. This herb is a sleeper. My healthfoodstore does not carry tincture yet! will order from mtn rose herb ((*_*))Thanks..Jahjet > > > mine is dried root from 'mtn rose herbs'. it does grow wild around here, but it is usually by the roadside, and subject to all kind of car exhaust fumes. > well, i'm sure it is other places besides the roadway, but i haven't been out in the woods to gather it. i suppose i could get you some in the spring or summer, i will look into finding some when the season gets closer. seeds may be your best bet. > i think the dried is going to be pretty strong, it feels 'tingly' > gail > > > ...Dearest Gail! Guest guest
Hi Jahjet and EveryOne, Poke root is a wonderful, healing herb but usually only a tiny amount of it is used. When made into a liquid extract usually only a drop or two is recommended. It is strong, so err on the side of less rather than more until you see how it effects you. Too much can make you very sick. Peace, Love and Harmony, Bev > > > > > > tested and got a positive response from my body about using the poke, i ti have a healthy respect for all the mother's herbs, hence my questions. i muscle hink i will boil some down, and figure it using that. thanks for the input about the mate, maybe the kt just mellows the flavor of the herbs > > > gail > > > > > > > Poke can hurt, if you get too much. > > > > > >
Guest guest
hi bev- thanks for your input. do you have any suggestions on proportions, using it in the pot as opposed to putting in for a second ferment? i have 2 cups of water set to boil on the stove, i am going to put in a cup of root and boil it for maybe 5 or 10 minutes, strain it and use that. i don't make many tinctures or elixers, advice or guidance is appreciated. i am going slow with this as i know it can be risky using some of the herbs that i do. i have one called 'indian pipe' that is bang up for pain, but boy, if you get too much, it is a little strange... gail It is strong, so err on the side of less rather than more until you see how it effects you. Too much can make you very sick.

Guest guest
Yes, nice write up, and illustrations. I finally located root in an herbshop. It was humbly located in an unmarked bin, where you had to ask for it.The info from well informed herb lady was, that a lot of cancer patients use it, and behold, there was a lady right behind me asking for some too.She hugged the bag, and meditated with it , with a knowing smile / she had cancer / I could not help but to remember a passage from " The woman who run with wolf " ... and when i looked below me i have seen, i am standing on the shoulder of an even older woman, and below her an even older one,and on and on....explaining how we support one another by telling and learning from each other.Peace Jahjet > > > > . > > FYI: > > > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokeweed > > > > > > Carolyn > > > > > >
