Guest guest
I checked on my 2nd batch of Kombucha today because it looked like it wasn't doing well. I shined a flashlight on it and found millions of little squiggly gross eels. We were so careful with cleaning that I'm at a loss. I scoured the boards and found out that papertowels are a no/no. Can someone confirm this? Unfortunately it was in my " how to " book that I could use them and I figured it would be ok. Here was our process: Wash jar with distilled vinegar Boil water for tea, brew 15 min add sugar allow to cool add scoby cover with papertowel and rubber band. I checked out my rubber band closer and it was not as tight as it could have been. Are eels fruit fly larva? Or are they something else? I have looked thorough the internet but have gotten conflicting information on what they are... How do I clean the container one I throw out the contaminated brew? Bleach? and then wash really well with vinegar? I'm going to be starting over and ordering a new scoby tonight. Bummed KT'r,
Guest guest
LOL, I went through the same thing just a month or so ago. You can do a search for " disaster " if you want to read about it. Totally fixable.<G> I took my brew, strained it through a few coffee filters...they do clog up with sediment. Then I used 1 quart brew to 3 quarts fresh sweet tea and started from scratch and grew a new scoby. Worked wonderfully! -Jenn
Guest guest
Yeah, Jenn, that's how I would've done it. You did have fruit fly larva though, right? Maybe not. We are beginning to be enlightened! " Vinegar eels " and fruit fly maggots are two different things. I think this is a common missconception. New for me at least. :-) Ever learning, Rodrick Re:Vinegar eels!! LOL, I went through the same thing just a month or so ago. You can do a search for " disaster " if you want to read about it.
