Guest guest
Hi Tobias and EveryOne, IMHO is usually fine to give a five year old child some Kombucha tea. Since regular Kombucha tea has some caffeine in it, it may be best to keep the amount small, especially in the beginning. Whether or not Kombucha tea would be of benefit for your grandaughter, I cannot say. Consider trying a small amount...an ounce once a day and see whether or not it helps....if so, the amount could slowly be increased. If any problems develop from taking the KT I would discontinue it for awhile and try again later. It would be fine to put one ounce of KT in another beverage such as juice or water if she doesn't like the taste of KT. It might also be helpful to give her acidophilus capsules and other healthy bacteria such as kefir as well. Guest guest
It should be okay to give your granddaughter Kombucha. I've heard that some children with encopresis often withhold bowel movements, as well ... which does, in turn, dull the urge to toilet. I know some children are being treated with a maintenance dose of Miralax. You mentioned a vinegar taste to your KT ... it is supposed to have a vinegar taste to it, you know. It's not supposed to be unpalatable - but that vinegarness is part of what helps the KT to balance the body's PH. > > My five yr. old granddaughter has been to the doctor and she has been > diagnosed with encopresis...(kids beyond the age of toilet teaching who > frequently soil their underwear). Guest guest
i think KT is fine to give to your gd in small amounts and with the cautions already offered by others. please also consider that encopresis often has both physical and psychological causes, and you have to consider many factors in treating it. in addition to looking into physical cures, encourage your daughter to talk to a child psychologist who has experience working with this issue. biofeedback is one great therapy to consider for kids that have not developed control of their spincter muscle. sometimes children develop a blockage in their colon, and rather than a normal bowel movement, they just have seepage around the blockage. this usually requires medical intervention in the form of fiber, laxatives, and possibly enemas and surgery, which can cause both physical and psychological trauma. sometimes encopresis is a symptom of other things going on (including such things as a well-meaning but over-controlling parent, to exposure to sexual contact of some type, or just a stressful live event). sometimes it is just a developmental delay. children that are slow to develop cognitively often are slow to develop physically as well, so consider her developmental level, not just her age. even if there is not a psychological cause, the problem can cause psychological issues like low self-esteem. a good therapist can help you deal with this in the most supportive way possible. this is not meant to scare you, or catastrophize what is going on, i just think that the more info you have, the better choices you can make, and the sooner you can resolve this issue, the better off your gd will be. bless the children dl ________________________________ From: Tobias Corner <tobiascorner@...> kombucha tea Sent: Sunday, November 9, 2008 8:37:22 AM Subject: Five yr old - encopresis My five yr. old granddaughter has been to the doctor and she has been diagnosed with encopresis.. .(kids beyond the age of toilet teaching who frequently soil their underwear). They have a problem with their bowels that dulls the normal urge to go to the bathroom — and they can't control the accidents that typically follow. My daughter has followed dr's advice and still the problem persists. My question would Kombucha tea help this condition? Is a five yr old too young for Kombucha? And if so how much tea should she start giving to her daughter? Thanks for your input and thanks for this group. I am still ending up with vinigery tasting tea...so gonna start a new batch with less starter...The scobies are beautiful... but my reserve of tea is goin' quick.
