Well I'm going to add a caution to the raw milk drinking. First I have drank

gallons of raw milk for years. I grew up milking cows and married into a

dairy family who on an average were milking 180 head of Jersey cows for over

forty years. Now when you buy raw milk make sure it's from a certified dairy

and not just the farmer down the street. The farmer down the street milk can

be just fine if his cows are properly tested, most are some aren't.

The main problem is Brucellosis that can be in raw milk if the cow is

infected. I had an Uncle who got this from cows in his grade A fully tested

dairy. This is something that seldom happens today because of all the

required testing that is done, but it still can happen.

In cattle Brucellosis is most commonly considered an abortion-causing

disease of cows, but bulls may become genitally infected and spread the

organism through their semen.

Most Brucellosis in cattle has been eradicated in this country by testing

and vaccination programs, but that is not the case in other countries.

It is rare for people to get Brucellosis from drinking raw milk, but as the

doctor told my uncle it can happen.

One of the biggest carrier's of Brucellosis in this country are buffalo. It

can be passed from them to cattle who are on the same range.

Goat milk falls under the same caution. When I had my milk goat's I had

them tested every year for Brucellosis.

By all means drink raw milk if you want to, just be aware of where it comes

from.

Jim, thank you for the info. i just wanted to clarify a few things: How can one

know if the cows have been properly tested? Is there some kind of certificate

that we, consumers, could ask the farmer for? Also, how to know if the animals

are pasture raised aside from what the farmer tells us?

Millions of thanks,
