Guest guest
The balance question made me think of something I'd like to ask you all. I'm wondering if I should worry about my daughter's seeming lack of coordination. On one hand, I notice she's not quite up to par with kids her age, but on the other I think she still seems just fine. She will be 2 in 2wks and has MANY characteristics of verbal dyspraxia (her ST also thinks she has dyspraxia). If not for the verbal problems I probably wouldn't think anything of her gross motor incoordination. She doesn't quite run yet (looks really funny if she does try), she still crawls up and down steps and she can't even begin to try to jump. BUT, she met all of her other major gross motor skills within a normal time frame (on the higher end, but still within normal). Her fine motor skills are excellent (ahead of schedule). She just seems so baffling to me. Anyway, there's a chance they will consider her delayed enough for intervention at her next eval (in 2 wks). She was a little behind at her last evaluation and hasn't changed since then. Is this something that she would NEED intervention for? Is it possible she has dyspraxia of gross motor skills? If so, would it affect her throughout her lifetime? It just seems that 3 mos ago I wasn't worried about anything EXCEPT speech and now I keep finding so many other things that I may need to worry about. I just wish she would seem more " typical " of her age. Thanks Bridget
Guest guest
My son, , is lagging behind in his gross motor skills. I finally pushed the ped to send him to physical therapy now instead of waiting another couple of months. He is 7 months old now, but the therapist says he is more like a 3-4 month baby with his skills and mobility. I would ask your ped about sending him to physical therapy to be evaluated. I am so glad that I gave her the little push she needed. ) PROUD Mommy to... Guest guest
My Sara was also diagnosed with gross motor delays at her 9 month check up and the ped referred us to Early Childhood Intervention. She started physical therapy at 10 months, and after only a week she was finally sitting up. At 11 months she crawled and at 13 months she walked, so you can see that she was able to make fantastic progress. She was discharged about a month ago (at 15 1/2 months) and is considered totally normal (well, as normal as she can be coming from this family. lol). The best part about it was that it didn't cost us anything, but Cigna actually reimbursed the state of Texas for the PT!!! They came to our house and showed us things we could do with Sara with toys and things we had around the house, and it was so easy and so effective. It might be worth looking into in your area. Good luck. Gail, Sam and Sara's mom, DOC grads Gross Motor Skills I took my son to the doctor today for his 9 month check up and he is lagging behind on his gross motor skills. He still isn't getting up on his knees to crawl and he isn't pulling himself up. I was wondering if anyone else has had the same issues. I was told at four months to try repositioning him because of the flat spot and in trying to do this I tried to keep him off of his back (He hated his stomach until lately). To know avail he still had to be fitted for a helmet at 6 months and started to consistenly wear it at 7 months. Now he has been wearing it for 2 months 24 hours a day and we go back to the orthodist next thursday for our last month fitting.
