Guest guest
Hi Robin's Mom, Just wanted to ask: if you say the right back of her head is flat, does she tilt her head at all? Does she have her left ear close to her left shoulder? My son was dx at 8 weeks with left tort. As a result, he also developed a flat right back because he was constantly favoring that side. If the right side is flat, I AM GUESSING, that MAYBE Robin has left tort? Does her left neck muscle feel tight? Can she turn her head to the left? Some kids can turn to the left (or right), but still tilt. If I were you, and I am not saying this to alarm you, only to educate and alleviate the unknown, I would not wait until September, I would push my ped asap to get a dx. The fact that she is 10 weeks is great, because if she does have tort, you will need to start therapy and she is sooo young you should have great results. Let me know, and I will try to help with all your questions. Are you a member of the tort group? Here is the link: Torticollis group You will find all sorts of info about tort there, check it out and ask away, they are a great support group with a lot of RESOLVED tort kids, so this can be licked, don't sweat it-if it is tort. Your doc will probably refer you to a neurologist and they will ask for a CT or MRI to rule out anything else it could be (usually this is done to make sure the spine is not involved- mostly this is purely muscular) Hope this helps! Guest guest
Hi Robyn's mom, I am new to the plagio group but have been a member of torticolliskids for a few months, Does your daughter still have the loud breathing sound you mentioned in your post? My son has this and the ER said it was brochitis but come to find out it is laryngomalacia (floppiness of the larynx diagnosed by his ENT specialist. He never had the cough associated with brochitis so we explored it and found out it was this. Also a condition called tracheomalacia (affecting the trachea) can also causeload breathing. If the loud breathing continues you may want to look into seeing if she has one of these problems. They usually outgrow these conditions. Lori W. on the tortkids site can tell you more about tracheomalacia, and a lot more about torticollis. Good luck and best wishes, Jodene and Dedric almost 5 months in NH
Guest guest
Hello and welcome! It sounds like you have a GREAT pediatrician!!!!! Wow good for him/her in keeping on top of this situation and knowing your baby might need a helmet. I wish my ped had been more responsive. Like most people here, my ped blew off my concerns and we had to really push to get him to listen when was already 7 months old!!! You are doing all the right things. Tummy time is not usually well accepted by babies who are used to back sleeping. Take it slow and she will accept it and enjoy it more and more. You might consider rolling a towel and placing it under her chest while she is having her tummy time. I think Boppy makes a product like that that is specifically for tummy time. Using the wedge positioner and rolled towels is the right way to reposition at night. We have some parents here that have been aggresively repositioning with great success. These people will surely have some more to contribute along these lines. Carrying in a front carrier is a good idea and should help as well. You are starting at such a good age. If the tummy time and repositioning don't work you will have good luck with the helmet at such a young age. As far as the side preference goes, it wouldn't hurt to have Robin checked for torticollis. If she has tort she will need some PT, but correcting the tort is very important to help with the plagio. It is possible that she simply has a preference. To help with this you might trying putting interesting things on the unfavored side to help encourage her to look the other way. Still, having her checked for tort is a good idea and I would encourage you not to wait until September. You will got to get started on PT right away to assist with the repositioning. I hope this helps. I am glad that you found us and I hope you will stick around and share more of your story with us. I think you will find this group to be an outstanding source of support, answers and friendship!! Marci (Mom to ) Oklahoma

I think we will be more aggressive with what we are doing, plus see the doctor before Robin's Sept appointment. I'll look into the Boppy products - I have two of them already and like them, but I don't have something for tummy time. Robin doesn't like the front carriers, unfortunately! I tried a couple and really like the Baby Bjorn, but she didn't!! Robin can turn her head to the left but it's hard to get her to do so. If she's SOUND asleep, I can reposition her, but otherwise I cannot. Holding her on my right shoulder only makes her look at my neck! She's always straining to look up and to the right, rarely to the left (although I think she can do this). I spiked a fever for unknown reasons during her delivery, so she had to get antibiotics for her first three days - they opened a line on the left side of her head and kept it there the entire time we were in the hospital, so for her first three days she wasn't able to turn to the left. She was also suctioned out which left her head a bit misshapen, but I don't think this is a factor. I'll call her doctor tomorrow and look into the Boppy right now!! Guest guest
Laurie, Thank you for sharing more of your story. It sure sounds like it could be tort - I'm glad you are having it checked out. I think you will be glad that you did! If you find out that it is tort then you might want to join the group called torticolliskids. They will be able to answer questions and give advice specifically about tort. Please let us know what you find out and also if you like the Boppy Tummy Time product.
