I had to switch to Birkenstocks several years ago. They make shoes and boots, in addition to sandals. They're the only type shoe I can wear, because I need a very high arch, and the extra width in the toe area. I also have plantar fasciitis, and this footbed seems to be exactly what I need. After several years of wearing them exclusively, the plantar fasciitis isn't bothering me at all, but before that, I could hardly walk, much less stand on my feet for hours at a time, teaching.

Subject: Affects of Weather on RA?

Hi, I first posted last week as "Another Newbie". My appointment with the rheumatologist last Thursday (9/18) was canceled due to the hurricane. I am rescheduled to go in to see her on Oct. 15th.Is anyone else's RA affected by the weather? I notice more joint pain and swelling when there is high humidity and also when the weather is cooler. This happens in addition to the daily pain/swelling/stiffness I experience in my joints in the morning and the evening (as well as off and on throughout the day). I also experience stiffness in the bottom of both feet. Has anyone else had to buy different size shoes? Are there any particular brands that are more comfortable or recommended? Best regards, (Hanging in there in No. VA)

Interesting you should mention weather today. I was just wondering if it is an old myth that rain causes flare ups. It was raining overnight here and is predicted to rain much of the weekend. My hands and wrists are as painful today as ever no matter what I do. Is that a myth or is there some reason for it?

Many people with arthritis seem to be affected by the weather. I have heard that it is not the humidity or the cooling trend that causes the pain but the low barometric pressure that causes both the pain and the other weather effects. It's not just your imagination. Good luck and God bless.

Yup!

You are right! The lower the barometric pressure the greater the swelling

and pain. Also I have noticed the effect of the moon….full moon

more problems. Since I have had these problems since I was 19 (I am 44

now), I have really paid attention to what affects me. Doctors have told

me too about the barometric pressure.

I

keep a journal everyday and put down how I feel and what’s been going on….stress,

weather, food, etc…it helps me.

Hang

in there!!!!! I moved away from south Texas along the Gulf Coast about 6 years

ago. Hurricanes were a part of my life. Now living in PA I thought

they wouldn’t be a problem. Ha ha! I become a hermit in the

winter when the lows keep moving over and over. Extremely high pressure

affects me too. Can’t win for losing. Ohhh well….

Take

care,

Carla

Does anyone have any suggestions for a woman's dress shoe appropriate to wear for business professional wear? I am concerned since I live in casual shoes due to the same problems as . I tend to avoid wearing skirts and dresses because I can't find dressier shoes that I can wear with them. (I've tried Naturalizers, Hush Puppies, and Easy Spirit and have spent a load of money on shoes that give me shooting pains, blisters and foot spasms after wearing them to an event for one hour). I'd appreciate any suggestions! Thanks! Sandy

Birkenstock has some Jane type shoes, or loafer styles, or boots that might work. But they obviously don't make anything with pointy little toes or heels. Check out "Birkenstock" on the web -- there are several good sites, plus one, "Sandals-4-Less," that's discount. Their selection is limited, though.
