This should be the aim of every human being, to make the world better for their having lived. Eldress Harriet Bullard ------------------------------------------------ IRSC Owner & Webmaster: irsc-webmaster@... Home Page: http://www.irsc.org Internet Resources for Special Children (IRSC) ------------------------------------------------ Almost one in five people have a disability. This includes 48.9 million non-institutionalized people in the US alone. Almost half of them (an estimated 24.1 million) are considered to have a severe disability. The good news is there is plenty of help available, at least in the US, if you can find it. The problem is, the help is hard to find. I faced this problem when my youngest son, , was born on October 31, 1983, with multiple disabilities. " Meconium aspiration " at birth caused cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and moderate mental retardation. Like any good father, I looked for information about these disabilities so I could provide as much help as possible. I discovered that the medical, educational, and legal rights information he needed wasn't readily available. My frustration was the information existed, if you knew, and had the time, to find it. For 13 years, I collected information through dogged determination, building a network of resources that helped . In 1996, I made this information widely available through creation of the " Internet Resources for Special Children (IRSC), " a website designed to make available information on the disabilities and other health-related disorders that impact children. Since then, the IRSC has been able to help parents, educators, caregivers, etc., from every part of the world. This month, I released an enhanced version of the IRSC. For 6 months, with the help of some very special friends, I led the site's reinvention to better meet people's needs. Enhancements include easier navigation, addition of many new disability and health-related categories, real-time news, access to relevant books, and an online community that provides people a place to interact and share information and experiences. I will be the first to tell you my son was a blessing. The IRSC is my way of sharing this gift to the world. The IRSC's Internet address is http://www.irsc.org. Note: In addition to building the site at my own expense, I maintain it as a non-profit site.
