Significant issues in special education policy elicit many critical points of decision-making including identification, assessment, programming issues, and conflict resolutions when programs do not seem to work. A child in a special education program is expected to benefit from program placement. This month's In Focus explores 7 major decision-making concerns to assure a child's academic progress. 1. Identification: Does my child have a disability for which special education services are mandated and in which my child can be expected to benefit? http://www.ldonline.org/abcs_info/articles-info.html 2. Assessment: What is it? Should I agree to have my child tested? http://schwablearning.org/Articles.asp?r=27 3. Who should do the assessment? http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/assessment/whocan_assessment.html 4. Does it make a difference if my child is classified under 504, ADA or IDEA regulations? This question can create a two-headed monster. http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/legal_legislative/update_504_2001.html http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/legal_legislative/monster.html http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/legal_legislative/section_504_ada_and_publi c_schools.html 5. What should be in an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)? The IEP needs specific, measurable, time-limited goals that match the child's learning needs. To find out more. http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/iep/legally_correct_ieps.html http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/iep/ed449636.html http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/iep/ed434434.html 6. My child is not progressing. The school will not alter the IEP. They requested mediation. What is mediation? Should I agree? http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/special_education/ida_mortenson.html 7. When should I request a due process hearing? http://ww2.nekesc.org/ksde/handbook/ch12fc.pdf ___________________________________________ NEW ARTICLES Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support. http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/behavior/positive_behavioral_intervention.h tml An Update on ADA, IDEA, and Section 504. http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/legal_legislative/update_504_2001.html Anger Overload in Children: Diagnostic and Treatment Issues. http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/behavior/anger_overload.html " Our School Doesn't Offer Inclusion " and Other Legal Blunders. http://www.ascd.org/readingroom/edlead/0112/kluth.html Effective Reading Instruction for Struggling Spanish-Speaking Readers: A Combination of Two Literatures. http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/reading/spanish_readers.html Handwriting Club: Using Sensory Integration Strategies to Improve Handwriting. http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/writing/handwriting_club.html Who is Testing Whom?
