Guest guest
Hi All, I've been reading the current posts about IEPs and the conflicting interests of parents and school administrations. My town is preoccupied with not raising taxes and this year voted down the school budget. When that happens, the council tells the school board where to cut. In my town, town council elections are often won/lost by just 20 votes. As parents of special needs children, it is important to be informed about the views of candidates running for school board, and it is important to vote. Together we can form a strong voting block, and exert pressure on the superintendent. A lot of money and resources go to special needs children and parents of " normal " kids resent it, citing the benefits their kids could have if that money was put toward their kids' enrichment/activites. I can understand that, but would they want to be in our shoes for a minute?! My reply would be, " Pay the higher taxes and thank your lucky stars! " Dr. Laveman is right in stating that rich communities have more money to spend on their programs, but it isn't always used for special ed. Again, it is political, and it depends heavily on the administrator of the special ed program, the school board and the political pressure exerted by vocal people in the town.
