Hello -

Welcome to the group! It's wonderful to have you here with us. As for

parent connections, aside from our supportive group, you can find other

families at the Down Syndrome Listserv, whose children also have Downs

and Apraxia. Below I have also provided some links to comprehensive

sites which include Downs and Apraxia/Delayed Speech. I also added

some inspiring success stories of outstanding individuals that have

Down Syndrome. Best wishes to you.

Hello I was just wanting to post as I think I already have but havent really

gotten in solid info. My dd is 3, she happens to have Ds. She is verbal and

signs. Her ST told us Friday that she wasnt sure but she thought we might be

looking at Apraxia. She said she kept teetering back and forth. She gave me a

website to look at Im just not sure. I came here and another group and most

everyone else has " typical " kid with Apraxia....anybody have any thoughts on

this?

Hi Angie, I have never posted here before, but I also have a 3 year

old dd with DS. I am just beginning to learn about speech disorders

so I am no expert here! Have you read the article on DS and Apraxia

by Libby Kumin at disabilitysolutions.org? It is volume 5, issue 2.

There are some other articles about speech there too. I am just now

reading it(it's kind of long so you may want to print it). There are

some resources listed at the end of the article that sound good. If I

run across any other info., I will pass it along. Feel free to write

to me privately if you wish. We seem to have a lot in common!

Hi Angie:

what's typical about apraxia. Many children have multiple issues going on at

the same time-DS, Autistic spectrum, PPD, SID, etc, etc. The websites that

helped me the most about being sure about what this " apraxia " was the

neurologist diagnosed. The websites are www.apraxia.org and

http://www.apraxia.cc

There are also various links to other great information about various other

developmental delays.

good luck

Dear Angie:

Please don't get stressed about this. Believe it or not, there is a lot of

information to digest. There are so many " issues " out there. If it's hard for

the professionals to diagnosis and treat properly, imagine what us lay people go

through. It feels overwhelming right now, but in time, as you keep reading and

understanding the information, you'll actually feel empowered and stronger to do

what has to be done. This is a long haul, it will never end, but what we gain

for our children is the best for their futures.

keep on trying and just love your child and yourself. It will help you both

Angie,

What do you mean " wasting time on helping her? " She's the ST, she should know

how to change gears and see if different tactics/therapy works. What you should

do is find out more about this and make suggestions to either your childs EI

coordinator or have the IEP reevaluated to maybe get an ST that knows and treats

apraxic children.

It's the same thing. The words used are really interchangeable. It just

depends on who you talk to. It's the same thing.

Selena, nooooooooooooo lol I mean the ST only mentioned it last Friday. I feel

like Im wasting time and not helping her enough in a weeks time. Does that

makes sense? She isnt diagnosed yet......and Im reading and asking questions

and blah blah blah and havent really done anything for her concerning the

possible apraxia. I guess Im a little neurotic. I want to work on it and work

on it NOW lol I know I need to have something done but tomorrow we have speech.

Angie, Sometimes before you walk you have to crawl. The best way you can help

her is to get as much information as possible, digest it, understand it, to then

have a way of trying to help her. I know I've become way neurotic when it comes

to Mark. It's this that will help make them all they and we are meant to be.

Diagnosis or not, you are on the right track. When Mark was younger, one of his

sp didn't believe in the apraxia dx. I didn't care, I wanted him treated as

such. If you treat as a speech delay and it isn't you are not going to get the

progress and results needed. If you treat as apraxia and it's not, nothing is

lost. From the speech and hearing website, you could find an sp in your area.

Definately go by the route of your school district or EI coordinator. Make sure

the sp has lots of experience and knowledge of apraxia. The therapy needed to

be done is different, not the same, no matter what the sp says.

Good luck and let me know what happens.
