Guest guest
Help! I need some assistance with an upcoming IEP. I am not new to the group so I do have the benefit of some insight into problems facing us families with apraxic children. I would just like again to hear from you guys with suggestions. Our 9 yr old daughter is apraxic. Doing well in school except having trouble with reading and writing -- apraxia based I am sure. She has been on an AD/HD medication since November (was tested borderline last summer and our physician recommended we try it. We have NOT told the school. She has not improved since taking the medication. The IEP team of course encouraged us to try it BEFORE they would even consider placing an aid with her during reading and writing. We now have the proof that the med is not working. My daughter's IEP was " structured " 4 years ago for speech and language delay because this is of course where her delay is obvious. Question #1: Do we need to restructure the IEP to list " apraxia " and if so, what do we call apraxia? A neurological disfunction? Secondly, the SLP there is asking me to supply the " team " with educational resources on apraxia. I have some materials which I have printed off through this site but any information concerning dealing with educators on the subject of apraxia would be most appreciated. We have been told that because our child's IQ is within normal range for her age that she is not " bad enough " to qualify for assistance. Anyone heard this before and if so, what is the response to this attitude? Thanks very much. Our IEP is May 14th.
