Deb Experts Predict 'Very Active' Hurricane Season POSTED: 10:38 am CDT May 22, 2006 UPDATED: 3:21 pm CDT May 22, 2006 MIAMI -- The federal government is predicting another "very active" hurricane season starting June 1. Forecasters are predicting that there will be 13 to 16 tropical storms or hurricanes. It's expected there will be eight to 10 hurricanes, and that four to six of those could become "major" hurricanes of Category 3 strength or better. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

chief Conrad Lautenbacher said that while a repeat of last year's devastating season is not expected, forecasters expect that a combination of enviornmental factors will lead to another busy season. National Hurricane Center director Max Mayfield said that if there's anything good that can come out of last year's storms, it would be a "culture of preparedness." Mayfield said long-term forecasts indicate busy seasons are likely to be the norm for the next decade.
