Guest guest
Leigh, I am alway looking for answers to the mystery of delays and LD's. I have a age 4 ds apraxia and a age 10 ds ADHD/ODD/tracking problems/LD. Older ds didn't have symptom of ADD/ODD until late 3's and age 4 ds is also starting to show signs of ADHD/ODD(poor receptive skills although they were fine at age 2 and behavior problems, etc.)Older ds talked on time and never shuts up (ADD symptom) I also have 2 LD brothers who in 70's were just diagnosed LD-not dyslexic. My younger, more severe LD brother also has a speech impediment. Never got speech therapy and that could be either apraxia or low IQ. From my dh description of childhool I assume he was undiagnosed LD-gifted. So in our case I would say definently genetic. Apraxia may be just genetic-I don't know- but LD can also be from difficult pregnancy or birth or head injury. Also I just had my age 10 ds in a brain gym type therapy and they also say not crawling enough as baby (either because of early walking, being cooped up in crib too much or I suppose if other delays limited crawling) can cause LD's but that doesn't fit at all in my sons case. Unfortunantly I have a friend with all 3 children apraxic. The younger two are twins and one of them also has SID. But there are plenty of other familys of apraxic children who have non-special need kids. I am also wondering about coralation of special needs kids to older moms. It seems that younger parents are uncommon on boards like this but than may be because more women are waiting to have kids or that those women are less likely to utilize support boards. Still I wonder. In advance congratualations on your twins. Whether or not they have apraxia I am sure they will be wonderful children with much to contribute to the world.
