Guest guest
Hi everyone!! Sorry I haven't been around much -we have a few exciting new projects going on at once. I wanted to jump in and share this with you before it gets too late and you might miss it. If you are interested in topics about kids and education, there is an interesting program coming to PBS soon. On March 27th 9 PM ET -PBS will broadcast 'Misunderstood Minds', a documentary about learning differences and the impact these differences have on individual children, their families, and society. The program will address the neuro approach to understanding and managing differences in learning that were pioneered by the excellent and well respected neuro-developmental behavioral pediatrician Dr. Mel Levine and the All Kinds of Minds Institute. In my opinion, some experts are still not acknowledging enough about the links between early speech problems and later reading problems - and just focus on the language aspect. Our contact at the US Department of Education is aware we are trying to raise awareness to the great importance to later learning from early evaluation and/or intervention for all children with signs of 'any' communication delays. It will be interesting to see if the speech aspect is covered -and if not -just a bit more work on all of us! Some of the leading experts in this area are behind this program -so one not to miss! http://www.allkindsofminds.org " Don't miss WGBH's moving and personal look into the world of Misunderstood Minds, premiering March 27, 2002 at 9pm ET on PBS (check local listings). You feel like the luckiest parent alive: Your seven-year-old is a bright, social, athletic child with countless friends. His potential seems unlimited, his future success unquestionable. Then one day a teacher calls to tell you that your child can't read. That is one scenario presented in Misunderstood Minds, a deeply moving and personal look into the world of learning problems, premiering on PBS, Wednesday, March 27, 2002. Misunderstood Minds reveals the stories of five families over a three-year period as they, together with experts, try to solve the mysteries of their children's' learning difficulties. As the leading expert in the broadcast, Dr. Mel Levine, founder and co-chair of All Kinds of Minds, discusses how parents and teachers can more effectively deal with a student's learning problem once they identify and understand its underlying source. Other experts in learning and child development contribute their insights as well, including: G. Reid Lyon, Ph.D., research psychologist and Chief of the Child Development and Behavior Branch within the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health Rick Lavoie, M.A., M.Ed., Director of Schwab Learning, and Helen Schwab Foundation Hallowell, M.D., child and adult psychiatrist and Founder of The Hallowell Center for Cognitive and Emotional Health Remember the child in your school classroom who avoided eye contact with the teacher, couldn't concentrate, or had trouble remembering his lessons? Perhaps that child was you, a friend, a sibling…or perhaps it is even your child now. Millions of people in the United States are personally affected by learning problems. Experts say that as many as one in five families are coping with children who struggle to learn. If not addressed, these learning problems can have a devastating impact on the students' self-esteem and future academic and social success. Misunderstood Minds illustrates the emerging view that specific identification and customized management of learning differences is key to the success of the millions of children struggling in school. With mounting evidence to support this approach, it has become clear that how we choose to address these differences can have a significant impact on a student's success or failure. We hope you will tune in on March 27 to learn more about Misunderstood Minds. Check your local PBS listings for airtime. " =====
