" At age 2 ½, Ted Mansfield was diagnosed with severe speech apraxia. He

was unable to say anything except for a very labored " all " for " ball " .

Never expecting him to be able to speak, doctors and therapists

advised his parents, Larry and Mansfield, to teach him sign

language. They also advised the Mansfields to get Ted communicating

quickly, fearing his frustration would lead to self-esteem and
