Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I'm looking for input and guidance concerning my daughter's IEP for language. She's 5 and will attend special ed kindergarten this fall. We do not have public kindergarten but this is a reverse inclusive system. She hasn't been evaluated by a SLP (privately) in a year and a lot has changed since then. We are relying on the school now and they have recently lost their SLP to maternity leave and have someone coming in twice a week but she isn't clinically certified. In September my daughter was well behind expressively and somewhat receptively. She appears to have processing and word retrieval difficulties. She has problems following directions and seems to remember one step out of 2(usually the last one she has heard). In working with her I have noticed she can't seem to hear the difference between word sounds, example-buds on the trees was heard as bugs on the trees. It's as if she supplies the ending with what she thinks if would be from words she already knows, make sense to anyone? The SLP is currently working on categorizing, attributes, and sorting which I feel she has a good handle on. They are also working on sequencing and directions a lot which is great but this has been for the balance of the year and I feel there are other issues too. She is a visual learner and works well on the computer at home where she does sorting, categorizing, color and letter recognition, patterns, and same and different. A year ago they questioned whether she had a hearing loss because that was how she appeared (she was tested by an audiologist and its fine). Should I have an evaluation done again by an SLP to see where her strengths and weaknesses really are?
