Guest guest
a response to the mom asking about the increase in 'self stim behaviors'............I understand and agree with the responses already given but thought I would throw this in as well: I think we as humans are a lot more complicated than we give ourselves credit for....in the past I would have thought the same as one responder " that this is an inappropriate form of communication " and just left it as that....a behavior that has to somehow be done away with as it is inappropriate......but lately something happened with my son that is changing my thinking: he too began doing these strange repetitive behaviors in school and at home like grabbing his crotch, pointing his finger up, turning his head to one side with a spaced out look in his eyes......they seemed to be getting worse and the school team suggested setting up a comprehensive " motivational chart " to get these behaviors to decrease......a few days after the meeting his right ear drum perforated from a bad infection (no signs ahead except a normal cold) and a few weeks later we discovered he is largely deaf in his LEFT ear........now that both ears are clear of infection and fluid these behaviors have almost entirely disappeared!!!!!!!!!! with NO MOTIVATIONAL CHART!!! I have decided that in the future when my son begins increasing or starting " inappropriate " behaviors I will use all of my rational powers and resources to find out what is going wrong for him that he cannot for whatever reason express to me (he can talk in full sentences and has a fabulous vocabulary but is SIX and doesn't have much life experience or abstract conceptual abilities) BEFORE jumping into a behavioral treatment program!! hope this little anecdote helps some family avoid some pain and agony in the future. Carol, Hope he's doing better! Thanks for sharing your experience. My daughter suffers from ear infections and we never know it because she doesn't run fevers or complain about pain but she will start to " act out " and do lots of stimming also. We discovered these " infections " just by chance. We would be at the doctor's for check-ups or because she had a cold that lasted too long. I can't take the credit for making the connection for my daughter, hubby noticed it. Audrey We have made this connection just by chance.
