Guest guest
Hi all, I do not normally post but I have some info that may help someone somewhere. There is a book out called How Well Does Your IEP Measure up written by Diane Twachtman-Cullen (who I have met through my sons teacher) and Twachtman-Reilly. You can read about it and order it from www.starfishpress.com There are other books available also. While I am at it a great big THANK YOU to all in this group for all the information I have learned a great deal, but most of all that I am not alone! Thanks Eileen
Guest guest
All I can say is if at all possible, push for an preschool inclusion program if that is available in your local school district. Our son who is 3 years, 4 ½ months old has been in our district’s preschool inclusion program since September and has made really nice progress – both with speech and socially. While Matt was always a social baby and then toddler, this experience has brought even more of that out in him. Even with his limited verbal abilities (which have grown since Sept. – single words to more attempts/approximations and stringing of a number of words/approximations), he has been able to become an active participant in his class. My husband and I had our concerns about how well he would be doing and the inclusion setting has really been a wonderful thing. I really think the “typical” modeling truly benefits our children. As an aside, Matt’s IEP includes the following speech sessions: 2 – 1:1 sessions; 1 – small group (1-2 kids depending on day); 1 – integrated (3 typical, 3 special/speech needs). We are also very blessed with a great SLP who has been assigned to Matt. I hope this helps! Best of luck! Debbie – NJ (Matt-3 years 4½ months oral/verbal apraxia; -11½ years-typical)
