Learning disorders breath test

A simple breath test could be used in the future to identify children with

learning disorders.

The test which is being researched at Oxford University in the United Kingdom

analyzes breath samples for ethane, a by-product of the breakdown of fatty

acids in the body. It will enable doctors to discover which children are

'burning up' fatty acids quicker than normal and who would, therefore, be

more likely to benefit from LCP supplementation.

The six-month test is actually being conducted on 120 children with

dyspraxia-some of whom are taking a fish oil supplement, while the others

receive a placebo. Dr. who is heading the research for the

Dyslexia Research Trust, told the London Daily Mail: " For too long many

children with dyslexia and dyspraxia have been misunderstood and their

talents have gone unrecognized. Early identification is crucial, and the

exciting thing about this biochemical test is that it is simple and

non-invasive, so it's suitable even for young children. "

Added Dr. , " Our research has already shown a clear link between

diet and some of the behavioral and learning problems associated with

dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD. Certain key fatty acids found in fish oil and

evening primrose are crucial in shaping brain development and function, but

they have been disappearing from many modern diets. Fatty acids are good for

everybody, but some people seem to need more of them. They seem particularly

crucial for individuals predisposed to these kinds of specific learning

difficulties. "

New study bolsters benefits for ADHD/Dyslexia

A recently published study provides further evidence of the benefits of LCP

supplementation in children with learning disorders. The study, which

appeared in " Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry " ,

was conducted by of Oxford University and Basant Puri of the

Imperial College School of Medicine at London's Hammersmith Hospital.

In their study, forty-one children, aged eight to twelve years, with both

specific learning difficulties (mostly dyslexia) and above-average ADHD

ratings, were either given Efalex or a placebo for a twelve-week period. This

was a randomized, double-blind trial so the researchers did not know which

children received the dummy capsule or the real thing.

At the beginning and end of the study a range of behavioral and learning

problems was assessed using standardized parent rating scales. There was no

difference between the two groups at the beginning of the trial. But after

twelve weeks the children receiving Efalex showed significant improvements.

This group scored significantly lower on general behavior problems, and

significant improvement in the anxious /shy and cognitive problems subscale.

The researchers commented: " Under double-blind conditions, supplementation

was found to be significantly better than placebo in reducing a wide range of

ADHD-related symptoms in children with specific learning difficulties. " In

encouraging larger trials the researchers encouraged specific investigation

of the value of the omega-3 fatty acid EPA. The supplement they used was said

to contain 480 mg of DHA and 186 mg of EPA.

Apraxia-more and more

Amazing anecdotal reports continue to come in of children with apraxia

suddenly beginning to talk after LCP supplementation. One recent story on the

list mentioned an eight-year-old boy who had had to use

an augmentative device to communicate. Some of his vocalizations sounded like

grunts. After a few months of taking ProEFA he was speaking in two word

sentences and didn't even want to use the augmentative device any more.

Because . . . he was " talking! "

Another mother reported: " We briefly stopped my son's Omega-3 to see if we

really were seeing the results as a direct result of using it. It was

devastating. Within 24 hours he had returned to nearly completely non-verbal

and was miserable. We will never attempt that experiment again. "

After LCP supplementation the mother of a four-year-old boy diagnosed with

severe apraxia wrote: " Lately everybody has been commenting on how well they

can understand . I noticed that I was not interpreting for 's

friends anymore. He even could have phone conversations and could be

understood most of the time. On Monday he was re-tested and had a speech

sample done. I had high hopes for the outcome. The speech therapist was

amazed. She said that in January he was 68 percent intelligible. She told us

that yesterday the scoring showed he was 86 percent intelligible. A 20

percent increase in less than three months! I am so proud of I could

shout it from the mountain tops!

Many parents have been reporting how LCP supplementation has literally " jump

started " their child's ability to speak. You'll find hundreds of stories if

you visit

" LCP Solution " published in UK

" The LCP Solution: The Remarkable Nutritional Treatment for ADHD, Dyslexia

and Dyspraxia " by B. Stordy, Ph.D. and Malcolm J. Nicholl has just

been launched in the United Kingdom.

The 340-page trade paperback, which has been on sale in the United States for

the last eighteen months, has been made available in the U.K. by the

prestigious publishing house of Macmillan. Praise has already come from Dr.

Brewer of The Daily Telegraph, who commented, " LCPs are one of the most

exciting recent discoveries in child development. They have the potential not

only to prevent, but also to help treat, common learning difficulties. This

book is an important guide to using LCPs. "

The U.K. edition has been fully updated and revised to include information

about the latest research, British products and British case histories. It is

available in major book stores and through amazon.co.uk. The American edition

is also available in book stores and through amazon.com and

barnesandnoble.com.

It's important to be sure that your child is getting enough DHA and EPA on a

REGULAR daily basis-and that you don't run out. It may also take a few months

before you see results. Taking fatty acid supplements is not like taking

aspirin for a headache. Your child's body needs to have his reservoir topped

up to compensate for years of " starvation. "

Buy 5 bottles or packs of Efalex, Coromega, Attention! Softgels or NeuroDHA

and get one FREE. Shipping for all six bottles/packs is just the same as for

one--$6.00-via Federal Express 2nd day. That alone can add up to a savings of

$30.00.
