Guest guest
Going to give all the history (long) so I won't have to do it again and so you can get your questions answered. I'm happy to do it, but I just asked all these questions, too...Here goes! My oldest will be 4 in July(and he's about 43lbs), has tons of words but is largely unintelligible except to his family and our closest friends. He receives ST 1X per week, and we just added a second session. He's been diagnosed officially with dyspraxia. I also feel he's got some sensory issues, but we'll wait for the dev ped to diagnose that...He's been on 2 ProEFA caps a day for about 11 days now - we use the horsepills from Nordic Naturals. He gets one in the morning in his juice and another in the afternoon in some root beer. We've noticed some changes, but as he was already verbal it's a little hard to differentiate hopes from reality. What we have noticed is a difference in content - a depth that was lacking before. Also, there is less repetitive speech and he is more likely to try to correct his pronunciation on the ProEFA. Just what we've noticed. My little guy is 2.5 (35lbs) and probably only has 15 words (including bump, moo, etc.). He has more phonemes than my older son did, so my concern is in a different place. We need to have him evaluated, but he is extraordinarily uncooperative and I fret they'll label him autistic. After a long talk with my fab pediatrician, we decided to have a dev ped look at my 4 year old to see if there was a genetic issue (it seems to run in my husband's family) and then look at Riley later. I've been giving him 1 ProEFA a day for about 7 days - in the morning. We've noticed more babbling, though most of it isn't terribly productive - alot of mamamama or dadadad or bababab - but I'll take what I can get. What we have noticed with him is an increase in interaction - more smiling, more game playing, just more interaction in general. We've also added about 7 words in the past week. I hope this helps. If you're trying to make the decision, my suggestion would be to call and order the stuff. My mother-in-law who grew up in England during WWII told me that they all got fish oil daily because their diet was so poor and they knew it was important for brain development. How can it hurt? If it's an affordability issue, that's different, but if you're just questioning it, let me say that I wish I had bought it 4 mos ago when I first read about it rather than waiting...We've not seen out-of-this-world changes, but I wouldn't give back what we've gotten - and it's not been 2 weeks!! Finally, no side effects noticed - digestive or otherwise. Good luck! Guest guest
Thanks for answering. Sorry for asking this question again, I just can't seem to decide what would be best for Brady. Actually we started the ProEFA 6 days ago and we've been giving him two a day (since a lot of the oil stays in the glass). It's really hard to tell a difference though because 11 days ago Brady broke his arm and three days ago he became VERY constipated so he's not been feeling all that great. I will say that he has been saying the " mamamama " sound for the first time in a year, I don't know if he's saying if for a specific reason, but at least he's making the " m " sound again. He also started telling me " no " very clearly and appropriatly a few days ago which is new. About two weeks ago, for two nights in a row, he told me " nye nye (nite nite) " but that was before ProEFA and I havent' heard it since. Bradys' babbling more too and making a bigger variety of sounds but I think this has been progressing for a month or so now so I'm not sure if I should credit ProEFA or not. Our biggest problem with measuring his progress is his inconsistency. Sometimes, on a good day, Brady babbles to us all day (and sometimes we *think* we hear a word), he plays, has constant eye contact, follows directions, pays attention, etc.. BUT sometimes he has a bad day and does little of these things, we can always getting his attention though, occasionally is just harder work. Thanks again for answering and I hope your sons' continue to progress. Donna Mommy to Brady 29 months and Connor 7 weeks
Guest guest
That does make me feel better. I'm still not sure about the ProEFA. I really don't think it's the cause of Bradys constipation because this is a frequent problem for us. I also realized that Brady is like this a lot when he is not feeling well/having trouble to go to the bathroom, the only thing different this time is that he is laying around and seems a lot more tired (he hasn't been sleeping well though because if the consipation). He was excessively " spirited " anyway so the lack of energy isn't holding him back that much. After he was able to have a small bowel movement he perked up a little and babbled, then he had to go again and went back to being cranky/tired/quiet but thats understandable. I dont' see him in any pain (except the bathroom thing) and he's not running a fever or acting disoriented or anything so I'll think i'll stick it out for a little while longer. Thanks for everyones replies. It's scary when you think you might be doing something to hurt your child. Guest guest
Hi Donna, That's so difficult - I know what you mean ! I also used to struggle because I would be looking at him so hard and I found it difficult to get perspective. If he is constipated too he may not be feeling well and that may affect him in any number of ways, including increasing or decreasing his speech. Don't apologise for asking questions and being unsure - that's what mums are for ! For what it is worth Charlie has good days and bad days - and some of his bad days are often imediately after we have changed something in his diet...removed a food or added a supplement . Each child needs time to react to things and you can often find it hard to judge what is going on as your child adjusts. I think many children are different and experience different reactions to the introduction of EFA's etc. Some may exhibit hyperactivity or poor sleep - you may just be witnessing your childs reaction. I'm sure others will be able to comment on their experiences for you ! I would never persist with anything that was distressing my son or causing him pain but I don't think that is what you are saying. I would have thought that six days is too early to identify any progress or problems and it may be worth sticking it out ( unless you are concerned). Re your childs behaviour generally - that all sounds really positive and again if I may use Charlie as a reference point ( although he is not the same as your son ). I have often noticed that at certain times , in certain situations Charlie is more " with us " than others . I think those times are the ones when he is feeling well , free from stress and it is easier for him to accomodate us . When he is unwell or bothered , if things are different or he is just " out of sorts " I think the effort becomes just that - an effort. He talks less , interact less and is harder to connect with. None of which is saying that your son and mine are the same but maybe your little one loves you and loves connecting with you but it is just a bit harder for him than other kids . Does that make any kind of sense ? If he is feeling different that may make him a little more closed down and less connected than usual . That is what happens with my boy . Anyway - let us know what you decide and how you get on ! Regards Deborah Dore > Thanks for answering. Guest guest
Regarding constipation. What does your doctor say about this? I know that exercise helps constipation, and some fruit juices. I would be concerned about constipation because my friends little boy (2 at the time) was very constipated and after being Xrays taken, his bowels were backed up quite seriously and they had to clean him out. I am not trying to scare you, but has your pediatrician researched the cause and remedies for you? Let us know! Good luck!
Guest guest
I would also be interested to know if anyone has tried any special diets or food eliminations w/ or w/out success. It seems I keep seeing these special diets now being recommeneded for children w/ any developmental disorder - not just autism or PDD. Guest guest
Actually my son was able to pass a lot if not " everything " tonight. It was painful though and I hated seeing him go through that.again. The last time, which was about a week or so ago (his constipation usually occurs on ave. one time or more a month), he cried so hard it broke my heart. He eventually passed it too but I know it was painful. I've called the dr's office about it before to do something to help him but I always get the same recommendations, " use vaseline, it'll help ease the passing " , " have him drink more juice/fluids " , etc..Needless to say these aren't the best solutions. Trying to get him to cooperate for the vaseline when he's hurting is very difficult and heart-breaking and fluids only prevent the problem, when it's too late those don't help. The last time it happened, towards the end, I told my husband if he didn't have a BM in a couple of hours then we would just go to the hospital- thankfully he did. I know how badly he must feel because almost immediatly afterwards he is ready to play and so happy, of course he's " sore " though. I think when I called the dr's office today the nurse realized this was a too frequent event and said she'd speak with the dr and get back to me tomorrow so hopefully we'll get to the bottom of the problem. Thanks for responding. I know how your friend must have felt, I had a problem " almost " that severe after having my son and I can say that it was worse than the 37hr labor! Thanks again. Guest guest
Well, I did find out from my mom's doctor, that fish oil, " CAN " cause constipation?? I am not saying it does all the time, I have to put my sons on a stool softner. Once I stopped PRO EFA, they did not have constipation anymore, 2wks., But I had to start Pro EFA again, I do believe in it But then I see the pain my kids go through in BM, is horrible,!! I watch their diet, lots of water, apples, peaches, raisins, sweet potatoes...but they still need a supplement of stool softner. Guest guest
About the constipation you referred to in Brady.... My son had a horrible bout of this when introducing more iron into him. So our dr's office suggested a suppository. It worked wonderfully. Wasn't pleasant to give but what a relief. I'll look up the name if you are interested.
