" Management Strategies -- Reading

Some kids with weak reading skills struggle to recognize and say the

sounds in words. Others have trouble grasping the meaning of words.

Skilled readers also need to be able to recognize and remember words

automatically. So lots of practice is important. If your child has

a reading disability, she'll need direct, explicit instruction in a

code based reading approach (phonics). Her teacher or another trained

professional should be doing the teaching, but there are many ways

you can help her at home. "

Management Strategies -- Math

" For many parents, the subject of math stirs up feelings of worry and

fear. While reading often creates images of warmth and fantasy, math

and numbers can bring on shivers and chills. If you think of math as

something " other people are good at, " or " something we'll never use, "

your attitude may undermine your ability to " coach " your child. There

are many ways to tackle math homework and point out how math concepts

are used in your home every day. "

Management Strategies -- Writing

" Writing is the most difficult form of language to learn. It involves

remembering and using many different skills at the same time -

organizing ideas, holding the pencil correctly, forming letters,

spelling words, using correct grammar, punctuating sentences, using

vocabulary, and staying on topic. Most of all, writing requires

patience. If one or more of these processes break down, then your

child may have serious problems writing. To act as his coach, you'll

need to learn how well your child writes compared to other kids his age. "
