Guest guest
response to BJ -BJ in polis, MD <<<<< Our private SLP loaned me a copy of a textbook titled " Developmental Apraxia of Speech: Theory and Clinical Practice " written by Penelope K. Hall, S. Jordan and A. Robin, who are all affiliated with the University of Iowa's speech programs. Book is published by Pro-Ed out of Austin, TX and copyright date is 1993. Thanks for mentioning that book --- I love it even though it really is written for professionals. I wish they would update it even. It lists most all of the studies done until 1993 on APRAXIA... You can get some good support concerning services intensity and if you are a real research person, look up some of the studies. Anyway, my son is only 2.5, so a long road until we dedicate ourselves to the reading issues, but one parent posted here about how she spent hours with her son so that when he was in school, he actually tested out near the top -- the school wouldn't address reading issues in advance, in other words, the child would have to fail to achieve before extra help would be given. Maybe we can try to raise awareness on the link between these issues and then get our kids the extra help so they can keep up with their peers before they fail. Our school district asks a lot of questions about when your child talked, walked, etc on the kindergarten application (my daughter is going this year), so the educators are already alerted that late talkers frequently have other difficulties, now we just need to get more help.
