Apraxia Network of Bergen County- meeting notes Wednesday

May 8th, 2002

The meeting opened at 7:15pm on wednesday , May 8th, 2002

Jeanne Buesser, president, introduced Greenberg,Ed.M, BCBA

Director of Hineni Program at Sinai Special Needs Institute. The address is

110 South Orange Ave, Livingston, NJ, 07039. His email is

jeremygreenberg@..., and phone # is 973-597-0770 ext 1121.

Mr. Greenberg spoke on Applied Behavior Analysis, (ABA) as it applies to

apraxic children. After distributing an outline of his talk, he explained

the importance of positive reinforcement of acceptable behavior, as opposed

to a child's negative reaction to punishment, which is self-defeating.

Mr. Greenberg stressed the need for simple corrections, with clear concise

direction. Prompts are useful, but should be discontinued when no longer

needed. A parent or teacher should always be consistent in behavior

modification. Praise words, hugs, even a cookie, should be the reward for

acceptable behavior. A general discussion followed, with Mr. Greenberg

fielding many questions from the audience. Two good reference books are by

W.C Becker (1971) Parents are Teachers. Reseach Press, Champaign, IL

Latham, G.I.(1999) The Power of Positive Parenting, P & T Ink

Jeanne thanked the speaker and closed the meeting at 8:45pm. Meetings will

resume in October, with notification going our to all members either by

e-mail or regular mail. Have a good summer!
