After distributing an outline of his talk, he explained the importance of positive reinforcement of acceptable behavior, as opposed to a child's negative reaction to punishment, which is self-defeating. Mr. Greenberg stressed the need for simple corrections, with clear concise direction. Prompts are useful, but should be discontinued when no longer needed. A parent or teacher should always be consistent in behavior modification. Praise words, hugs, even a cookie, should be the reward for acceptable behavior.
