So my teacher was at our home today to do the therapy play for my son

with Down. Since I have a 10 year old with Autism, she asked me a

question I thought you could all help me with. She said another one of

her clients has a four year old diagnosed with Autism (seems high

functioning). He just got kicked out of Montessouri school due to

behavior issues...boy, we've all been there! She was just in tears

about where to place him so she can work. I know the school district

will help her as they have done with my 10 year old, once he is of

school age. What do you all do until then? Any and all help will be

appreciated. Ive given the teacher my email to pass it along to her

and will give her the web group to join, but she needs help NOW! Oh,

she lives in Baldwin Park.

Thanks,

The school system should help her now, they are responsible for services after a child turns 3. My son attended full day SpecialEd Prek when he was 3.

What state do you live in? In New Jersey once a child is 3 each district is responsible for providing preschool disabled services once that child is registered and evaluated. (Every district does it differently 1/2 day full day in district out of district ... but there is always something available.)

Your state should have a pre k program to help the 4 year old.

Once a child turns three (3) years old they are eligible for service

through the local public school district. The client must request a

meeting, in writing. The school district has 60 (sixty) days to

respond. Because we are near the end of the school year the client's

son may not be able to get services until the fall. However, most

schools have some form of extended school year available (summer

school) and he might be able to go to that. I would have her talk to

the school's principal to see how responsive he/she is to any services

starting before next school year starts. Good Luck, Sue

I'm not finding the original message to which Sandi replied, so I'll just wing it.

Lots! And right at home. You can teach them to read, easily, if he/she doesn't, math, bits of information, all of which help all development. Check out www.iahp.org and/or ask me more, if you are interested.

Sincerely,

Francine
