Guest guest
Hi, I have a six and half year old with Asperger's. Like many Aspies, he is inconsolably freaked out by dentist visits. I try hard to prepare him. We brushed (Wilbarger's), brought sun glasses for the bright exam light, and his usually noise reducing headphones to reduce the sound from the dental tools. This time we even had our visits all at once--for demonstration--dad, then mom, but when it was his turn, although he seemed pretty even keeled throughout the visit, he fell completely apart again. He really needs two fillings--the dentist has tried twice already to get the job done. This time our Dentist asked me to take my son to a different dentist that was more specialized and could sedate him. Am I crazy? I feel it is wrong to drug my child for a cavity. On the other hand, when I see how it makes him fall apart it makes me desperate for the help. What are your thoughts and what has worked for you? Guest guest
well out of my 4 kids all but 1 freaked with the dentist my 2 autistic sons and my 5 yr old ( nt .)it ended up i had to get them all sedated either through iv or just the liquid that makes them loopy.it is scary to need to sedate for dentist work but the work needs to be done. if they are the baby teeth it can ruin the perm teeth not out yet .if it is the perm teeth if left untreated it could lead to more dentist work or loss of the tooth which sucks either way. my kids all did well on it got all the work done at once well depending on how much needed . my lil girl she would freak if i mentioned she had an appt. and freaked in the office each time. she is the nt.the boys who also freaked i had tried everything ..reading books, the glasses the prize at the end and so on and so on . didnt work so they got the sedation now that they are both older (14,12)they go no problem .i hope you find a good solution for your son. good luck Vickie WwW.SparkleTags.Com----- Original Message ----From: bpokrandt <bpokrandt@...>Autism and Aspergers Treatment Sent: Saturday, June 7, 2008 9:13:58 AMSubject: Vent/Help with dentistHi, I have a six and half year old with Asperger's.
